"Essentially Peranakan" Day 土生华人文化讲座

Attended "Essentially Peranakan" event, presented by The Peranakan Community, at Asian Civilisations Museum on 8th October (Saturday). I am intrigued by the Peranakan culture and food, this cultural event was a special treat for me.

I learnt the various aspects of the Peranakan community's way of life which comprises religious rites, popular cuisines, exquisite jewellery, colourful costumes, fine beaded products and their unique language. The speakers are Babas and Nyonyas themselves who shared their personal experiences and precious photos.

I am particularly impressed with speaker Baba Lloyd Ignatius Matthew Tan (who is also my FB friend). He spoke on the "Belly of Rumah Baba", bringing us on a culinary food journey of memories and traditions from his family homes in Bonny Grass and Telok Kurau Road. I learnt about the different festivals and what type of Peranakan food is served during moments of joy or sadness.

During lunch break, I was offered some refreshments and I had a taste of Baba Matthew's yummilicious pulot sireh kaya. I had two pieces of his old style kueh, the top layer is so rich and smooth. Wish I could achieve his kueh-making standard one day.

The elegant Nyonyas in their beautiful baju kebayas and kasot manek (Peranakan beaded slippers). It's so fascinating to learn about the significance, symbolism and the types of jewellery from a Baba collector of antique Peranakan jewellery.

Thanks to sponsors for the door gift and my pretty lucky draw prize of a star brooch. Yeah!

PD31

Found a tasty Penang Assam Laksa (RM5) by chance. The cheerful elderly uncle works together with his wife in this newly opened eatery. He approached us when we stopped to look at their chalkboard outside their eatery.

He claimed that their Penang Assam Laksa was cooked according to a 40-year old recipe of the owner's grandmother and if I didn't find it tasty, he would refund me the money. Since it was not expensive, we stepped inside and hubby paid for a bowl of assam laksa.

There was another couple who were from Johor Bahru. They both shared a bowl of assam laksa and commented that it tasted yummy.

The equally cheerful wife started preparing the ingredients for uncle to cook. When I brought out my camera, uncle enthusiastically made several poses for me. We laughed as his wife commented that he has "so many patterns (ways of cooking the noodles)".

The couple waited with abated breathe while we tasted the noodle. I like the thick, flavourful gravy, which has a balance of sour, sweet and spicy flavours. Relieved, the couple broke into smiles and the wife shared her home cooked century egg porridge with me. We spent a delightful hour chatting with one another.

We were interrupted abruptly when the young owner came in and pointing to my used tissue on the table and a small thrash bin, told me curtly, "Used tissue in here." I did as told. Then seeing my backpack on a chair next to me, he pointed at it and said,"Bags in the shelf underneath the table." No please and thank you.

I just picked up my stuff .... and walked out. Uncle came out to send us off. When I took out my camera to take a picture of the eatery, uncle posed for me again. haha.....

Black Thorn (Ochee) Durian @ Penang

PD39

On the second day of our Penang trip, while having a late lunch, we received news that a Black Thorn (Ochee) durian has been found. Hubby was all excited and couldn't wait to see the coveted branded fruit which was the champion durian in 2013 and 2014 in the Malaysian Agriculture Department's durian competitions. Our good friend Angel offered to drive us there. She called the durian seller and reserved the fruit.

The durian seller immediately knew we were not locals from our accent. He told us that a group of Singaporeans came to his stall unannounced the day before and he didn't have many durians then. (could hear the sharpening of knives.... LOL)

He brought out the durian and weighed it.... 1.92kg. He quoted us 1 kg of Black Thorn durian was RM70 (price was higher than what I read on my Penang food blogger friend's blog). My initial response was "reject" but my hubby had made up his mind on getting his hands on this branded Ochee. He was prepared to be slaughtered. His reason was : we had come all the way to Penang for the durian and he waited two years. OK lor.

PD38

Was it a fake? Ochee experts will know. Photo shows the bottom of the durian and a characteristic longkang (drain) running down the middle of the fruit.

Hubby had a photo shoot with the Black Thorn before officially opening it. LOL

The shape of the durian is round and there were 10 pips inside. The durian flesh is orangey, creamy, sweet and has less fibre ... a fine texture. There was not much aroma.

It was an anti-climax for me once I tasted the sweet durian. Taste is subjective because I prefer bitter durians.

PD40

Later that night, because we had a mission to accomplish. We contacted a Datuk in Penang to help us find some good Ochee durians. He arranged a durian plantation trip for us the following day.

We went to the mountains where I received a crash course on the variety of good durians and how to select them.... got some mosquito bites too. Hubby got to eat more durians and some takeaways .... very good durians. A fruitful trip. LOL

As for the VIP, he received his Ochee durians plus 3 more excellent varieties.

Rainhill Guesthouse @ Penang

RH5

My good friend and food blogger Criz recommended me this Rainhill Guesthouse in Penang. He was quite secretive about the place, did not tell me much, just said that it is conveniently located in Georgetown and has easy access to food and transport. :D

I took the public transport from Penang Airport to Komtar bus station and walked to the guesthouse which was housed in a heritage area. It was not difficult to find.

PhotoGrid_1467252610037[1]

I was a little hesitant when I saw Rainhill Cafe instead of a guesthouse. I pushed open the glass doors and it was like I just stepped into a jungle. The whole guesthouse was creatively decorated with cardboard animals and art like a jungle. And most of the furniture were made from cardboard.

RH3

We just couldn't resist posing with the handcrafted accessories and unique interior. My hubby tried sitting on the cardboard chairs and stools. They held up despite his weight. LOL

RH

Jason, the young owner of the guesthouse, came to greet us and bring us to our room. We had the Zebra room with ensuite bathroom. The room is small but since we were out most of the time, it was perfect for us.

Pleasantly surprised to see the bed is made of cardboard too. I was a little apprehensive whether it could withstand our weight and bed exercises. haha.....

There are clean sheets and towels .... most important is there are no unpleasant smells or stains.

The bathroom is tiny. Glad both my hubby and I lost much weight, or else it would be too small to fit us.

RH2

Lovely decor and a quiet place although the guesthouse was fully booked. Free wifi, we like to sit in the living room in the mornings and at nights to read our emails. The walls are not sound proof so we were careful not to speak too loudly.

We could almost find everything we need in the living room - hairdryer, stationery, sewing kit, first aid....etc.

PhotoGrid_1467250909230[1]

Simple breakfast with a choice of bread, cereals or biscuits are provided daily. Coffee and tea are available throughout the day. There is a hot and cold water dispenser.

We could do some simple cooking and use the crockery, and it is courtesy to wash them and return them to their respective places after use.

Laundry service is available.

RH6

I had a peek at the other rooms - Reindeer and Elephant - when the guests checked out. The Elephant room is the largest and can accommodate 4 people. Two rooms are rented out to long term boarders.

There are some famous night hawkers several doors away from the guesthouse. We tried the food one night and found them delicious. Will write about them in another post.

Black Thorn Durian Hunting in Penang

PD1

After my Sunday night's durian party at Amber, I flew to Penang with my hubby the following morning to look for black thorn durians for a VIP.

Flight was delayed, arrived in Penang airport in the afternoon. Wanting to explore as much of the island as possible, we boarded public bus #401 to Komtar and walked to our guesthouse in Lebuh Presgrave. haha....

PhotoGrid_1467250464832[1]

Around 4 pm, our good friend, food and travel blogger Criz who also recommended the guesthouse to us, came to bring us to buy durians. The black thorn durian was not good that day, so we didn't have it.

We sat by the roadside eating Durian Kang, 604 and Musang King durians. I love bitter durians, so I enjoyed the Durian Kang and 604. We paid RM100 for these 3 durians.

Criz bought a red prawn durian for his dad, so we stopped by his father's house for a while before going to a traditional cake shop to purchase some snacks to bring back to Singapore.

PD2

We were offered a spicy prawn Tambun biscuit and their special coconut filled mooncake. Criz recommended a cranberry raisin biscuit which I cannot stop eating. I bought a few packets home to gift away and has only a few pieces of the biscuits left now.

I had specially requested for Penang's delicious handmade gong tng (peanut candy). But when Criz drove us there, it was closed on Mondays. ish. I didn't get any on this trip because I didn't have time to go back. *wails*

PD3

Criz brought us and his god brother to his favourite place for dinner. Of the dishes he ordered, we love the salted egg mantis, pumpkin tofu, fried belacan chicken and the bittergourd soup which was on the house. We paid for the dinner, initially hubby and I couldn't believe the amount charged. Slightly more than S$20 for all those dishes!

PhotoGrid_1467250709785[1]

After our meal, Criz sent us back and suggested after dinner coffee at a coffee shop near our guesthouse. Hubby was drooling at the aromatic duck egg char kway teow (fried noodles), so we ended up ordering a plate to share. No regrets. It was delicious. The next two days, hubby was missing it very much but we didn't have a chance to go back for it.

We returned to our guesthouse tired but stuffed with food. hahaha.....

eastcoastlife Eaten Alive by Fish!? - WS #14

It was a freak accident. This morning, eastcoastlife and her students went boating and were attacked by a shark.

Very sad. So young. So beautiful. sigh .......

hehehe......

The truth is : eastcoastlife was attacked by fish......., not by a shark but these

Fish (Garra Rufa) nibbling at the dead skin

I went to a tropical fish farm and enjoyed a Fish Spa. This fish farm, Qian Hu, operates a nail spa that is different. Instead of using conventional tools to remove the dead skin and cuticle of your feet, it uses the fish, garra rufa.

The garra rufa is commonly known as Doctor Fish, Nibble Fish, Kangal Fish or Lickers Fish. This non-migratory freshwater fish is found in the rivers of Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Turkey and Syria. In hot pools, this fish can live at a temperature around 37 degree Celsius. They have a lifespan of 4 to 6 years.

At Qian Hu Fish Spa, customers are seated round a huge communal fish pool with their legs immersed in it. Scores of fish nibble away at the dead skin on their feet. I felt hundreds of tweezers pecking at my feet. It was ticklish, occasionally a bigger nibble fish would take a big bite. eowwwww ........

I was told my skin would feel silky smooth and healthy after the dull and dead skin is removed. So I graciously endured for 30 minutes. A lady claimed her skin was smoother after the treatment and intends to have her whole body immersed the next session. Horrors!

This Doctor Fish therapy is said to heal Psoriasis. The fish nibble at the diseased skin until the upper skin is completely removed and release a small quantity of dithranol, an enzyme which results in skin rejuvenation.

Qian Hu sells these fish, so you can re-create the spa at home. A small Garra rufa costs $10 and a larger one is $20. Don't worry, these are not Pirahna fish, your kid would not turn into a skeleton should they accidentally fall into the pool. hehehe....

Charges :
$10 for 30 minutes, with slippers and towels which you are free to take home.

Get eaten by fish - rewind and relax with your family and friends

Porky Foot Goes Home

Chris wheeled me to Gurney Plaza next to G Hotel for lunch. Fresh air! First time I felt good to be pushed around! hahaha.... We had a delicious lunch at Hong Kong Wong Kok Cafe. Chris' Roast Pork Claypot Noodle was really fantastic! My Seafood Baked Rice was as good. We bought some baked dimsums which tasted awesome.

Back at G Hotel, we took some photos at the crime scene. This is the wooden steps that caused my downfall.
The ramp was too steep for my wheelchair. I needed 3 strong men to push me up.

I'm trying to remember how I landed. Spread-eagle? In a crumpled pile? Twisted?

My fall was captured by the hotel's CCTV. I'm wondering if their CCTV in the lift has sound recording. I'm afraid I let loose a string of unmentionable English and Hokkien expletives while I was in it. *gasp* hehehehe...... Many people would probably be able to lip-read. :P

Chris and I returned to Singapore on Monday night. After much problem with Singapore Airline's weird rules and system. I was crammed between narrow seats and my swollen ankle started to hurt an hour into the flight.
I then had difficulty climbing up to my bedroom which is on the 3rd level of the house. My students and male staff tried to carry me up but it was too dangerous. Someone could slip and we would be a heap of broken arms and legs. And it was impossible to get a fork-lift at this hour. ^-^

How do I get up to my bedroom? Ta-da! I made my butt climb up the stairs! Tiring but I did it! I will be stuck between my bedroom and Entertainment Room for the next 2 weeks.
I would make full use of this time to strategise and do more writing. :)

My porky foot, now in a fibreglass half-cast.

The Emperor's visit..... and glorious food!

I spent a whole Saturday surfing the internet in my hotel room. I was pretty much left alone. Swollen foot was giving me Hell. ouch!

I had the pleasure of having the Emperor with 48 concubines descent on my humble hotel room, accompanied by the Rainbow Queen and his Imperial Physician. My porky foot was scrutinized, criticised and pigtured. duh! It's more famous than my pretty face. *cough... cough....*

I was presented the delicious, reknowned Assam Laksa of Penang! And the Emperor's prized lormaikai (steamed glutinous rice with chicken and mushroom) that was absolutely delicious! A curry puff and some siewmais. ^-^

The Emperor made a quick call to Housekeeping and bowl, napkin, cutlery were nicely set for an Imperial meal on my bed. Special Imperial services of massage and the offer to change me into my bikini for a dip in the inviting hotel pool! tsk tsk tsk..... the porky foot evoked the Emperor's lusty imagination of a curvaceous porky body. hahaha......

We had a fantastic time suan-ing (hurling verbal abuses... hehehe.... ) one another! ahhh..... it was the time where I felt so alive after my painful accident! Thanks for these great souls, for their wonderful companionship and gifts of love.

Chris arrived after 9pm. I was famished and devoured the food he bought like a hungry wolf. Would the weak and softie doctor be makaned had I taken up his offer of dinner? mwahahaha.....

Come night, pain descended with such intensity, I had to resort to more painkillers. It was raining heavily outside, Heaven crying over my painful ordeal? :)

************************oo8oo***************************
Early Sunday morning I was awokened by gastric pain. More painkiller and back to blogging. Chris managed to recce the area round the hotel and swim in its pool.

The Terrible Trio returned with the Famous Assam Laksa by the Longkang and sweet, sweet rambutans! And the latest fashion of The Emperor's New clothes was revealed! Gasp! Sexsational. :)

On Sunday, at 10pm, borrowing the wheelchair from the hotel, Chris pushed me down for dinner with the Terrible Trio at Chilli's. Dr Bernard arrived after an Emergency surgery. I suspected he rushed through the surgery just to have dinner with us because he needed to return to check on the patient. Probably left the scalpel inside the stomach. ho ho ho.... nay, he's a responsible surgeon. :)
We had gigantic mouths matching humongous burgers! And a Molten Chocolate dessert of sinful choclate cake and vanilla ice-cream!

After dinner, back to the room for more porky leg jokes and orgy camwhoring! Woot! This is a Blogger Meet that I received the most big hearty HUGS! :)

Genie sent me a Food Directory of Penang.
So very kind of her!

eastcoastlife injured in G Hotel, Penang

I touched down in Penang airport at 9.35am on Friday morning. Took a limousine to G Hotel at Gurney Drive. I was told it was too early to check in but after some winking and flashing begging, Nuar managed to get me a room. Happily I took the key, turned and walked barely 5m, when I missed the wooden steps in front of me and POOOM!!! Fell down. (ay.... I can hear peals of laughter here arh......)

I composed myself, straightened my back and walked towards the lift. I started feeling pain in my left ankle. Once in the lift, the pain hit me very hard. I could barely stand. I was groaning with pain inside the lift. I also noticed the bottle of Singapore Sling that I bought for Dr Bernard was broken and dripping blood red liquid on the lift carpet. Uh-oh!

I dragged myself out of the lift, a trail of red liquid dripped all the way from the lift to my room. hehe... paiseh. Looked like so seriously injured. I quickly called Operator and asked for ice cubes to apply on the quickly swelling left ankle. I also asked for a doctor. While waiting for help, I took pictures of my ter ka (pork trotter, my swollen left foot). Help arrived within 10 minutes. The Front Office Manager Navin and Lobby Manager, Wann came up to my room with a wheelchair. Wann would accompany me to a clinic.

Wann wheeled me down to the lobby to a waiting taxi. The driver Lee and Wann helped me into the taxi and we drove for about 15 minutes to a clinic which has re-located. Then we went to another clinic at Pulau Tikus. It was a small, inconspicuous clinic.

The lady Indian doctor took a look and when she pressed on my left ankle, it hurt so much, I bawled. Wann was taken aback. Maybe he had never seen a sophisticated matured lady cried before. But it was very painful. The ankle was quite swollen by then. It felt tight.

The doctor said I had better go to the hospital. It looked like a fracture, I needed an X-ray. So we got into the taxi (Hey, not easy ok? Wann had to let me grab hold on to him whenever I got in and out of the taxi. I was quite shy, but had to rely on him.) and headed to Hospital Pulau Pinang.

I had to register and again a guy pressed my swollen ankle during examination, releasing another flood of tears. Painful ok! I called Dr Bernard to tell him I couldn't meet him. He was shocked to hear that I was in the hospital, so he texted Dr Chen. I was wheeled to Emergency Room..... to wait. Later I was seen by a lady Indian doctor who asked me to go for an X-ray.

After my X-ray, Wann wheeled me back to Emergency Room to wait. It took more than an hour. When my X-ray was ready, I was told there was no fractures but I could have torn a ligament, so was asked to see an Orthopaedic. I was given 2 painkillers but I have to eat some food first. So Wann brought me out to grab a sandwich and a Milo.

While trying to swallow my lunch, I checked my messages and Bernard texted a while ago that he was on the way to see me. He was an hour's drive from the hospital and he was crossing Penang Bridge to see me!! When I saw him approaching from the carpark, my tears was about to break the dam. So kum tong (touched)! I almost stood up and threw myself at him! hahaha...

Bernard then accompanied me to ER. He took a look at the X-rays and said there was no need to see the Orthopaedic. So he sent us back to the hotel. He went to buy 2 cold packs before coming up to my room. And he forgot to have his lunch that day!

While scrutinizing the X-rays again, Bernard said I might have a bone alvursion. So I was advised to see an Orthopaedic in Island Hospital which is a privately owned hospital by a Singaporean. I called Wann again and he wouldn't couldn't accompany me. So he got the taxi driver Lee to send me.

I was bundled into the taxi and off we set to Island Hospital. It took less than 30 minutes to see a specialist. The injury was nothing to worry about. I had to put on a brace. And no stepping on the left foot for a week! I was asked to do a ice compression therapy and an ultra sound. Both the therapists were quite cheerful and talkative. We had a blast bantering and one of them took pictures for me. I was RM400 poorer after that laughter session! sigh.......

Lee sent me back to the hotel. Bellboy Izane wheeled me up to my room and made sure I was comfortable before leaving. LB called to chee kek (provoke) me. He was clearly tickled that I got my just desserts. He was laughing on the other end! All because I told him I would push him around Penang and then down Penang Hill in a wheelchair! So, friends, don't anyhow open your mouths to curse tease others. hehe....

Wann came to see me and asked me to help him by writing my version of what happened that day. He also handed me the taxi fare bill, RM120. Doctor's fees will be charged to my hotel bill. He made sure that water, a fruit platter (compliment of the hotel), TV remote control and ice cubes were within my reach before he left my room. Dr Chen came to visit me with lotsa Penang delicacies in the evening. There was Penang Char Kway Teow (Fried Noodle), Oyster Omelette, Rojak (Fruit Salad) and an appetising beverage! *burp*

All this time, my ankle was hurting like crazy. I wasn't moving much. My swollen ankle was propped up on 2 pillows. I took painkillers but they weren't providing relief. Cable TV was my only companion. I was injured and alone in a foreign country.

Bernard was texting me all this time to check on me. When he heard that I couldn't sleep because of the pain, he came over to give me painkillers. And it was already close to midnight! This incredible guy drove for an hour to deliver painkillers to this sick Aunty! Wah! How to repay him? *scratches head*

A much awaited awesome vacation of yummy food, meeting of Malaysian bloggers, feasting on famous Balik Pulau durians and checking out interesting places in Penang turned into a tour of medical facilities and meeting doctors. aiyooo.........

Many of the staff in G Hotel know me as the invalid woman in Room XXXX. A taped recording of my fall must have been viewed countless times. Probably on YouTube now. hahaha.... I reserve my rights on seeking legal advice.

I'm now hopping on my good leg to the bathroom. I took my baths hopping on one leg too! Amazing. Another accident waiting to happen in the bathroom. Now are you wondering how I wear my panty standing only on one leg? mwahahaha..........

eastcoastlife injured!

I had a freak accident and am alone in foreign land. Post will be up when my photos can be uploaded. I'm confined to the bed. ^-^

Eat, shop n a Bomb went off in KL!!

I had left Jaymes to make the travel arrangements. We plan to go backpacking in Europe after his GCE O levels. Booking hotel rooms and buying tickets online is nothing new to him, all he needs is a credit card. haha.....

We went up to KL in a 24-seater super coach. Jaymes' idea of a leisurely holiday. -_-"' Yes, he slept all through the journey while my old bones creaked and ached.

Upon arriving in Pasarakyat Bus Terminal, I realised he booked the wrong hotel. There were no cheap available hotel rooms in Bukit Bintang, I asked him to book Swiss Garden but he booked Swiss Inn, which is located right inside Chinatown. Well, actually it is very convenient to the LRT station and great food! :)

We tried the food at the roadside stalls. Something we don't get to do in Singapore. We had a very expensive bowl of Bak Kut Teh (Pork Rib Soup)! grrrr......

We watched the Fantastic Four movie at KLCC. Spent half a day there before proceeding to Bukit Bintang's Sungei Wang for Jaymes' comics and my magazines. On the way, we encountered some wild monkeys and tried feeding them. Had a delicious dinner at a popular Hong Kong cafe there.

We met up with some friends and tried lots of yummy food. The traffic was very bad in KL.

Read in the papers on Sunday that a bomb went off in Puduraya Bus terminal which was near to our hotel. A homemade bomb, the type you could make in your home by surfing some websites. yikes.
I thought the place would be heavily guarded or security would be quite tight, but when I kaypoh (busybody) went to look, it was as usual. I didn't see any policeman. Like this in Singapore, the whole place would be swarming with policemen. :)
