Lotus Buns@ Redhill - WW

lotus

Pretty mini Lotus Flower Buns (50 cents each) with lotus paste filling. These buns are really fluffy and soft and the lotus paste fillings are tasty. They are available only on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month. Customers usually order them for religious offerings.

Elderly stall owner uncle Jian Cheng, who handmakes these pretty buns with his wife, is a vegetarian. He has been selling a variety of yummy traditional dimsum at Redhill Food Centre for the past 30 years.

Uncle Jian Cheng worked in a bao factory when he was younger. When the factory folded, he lost his job so he rented this stall and started selling baos to hawkers for 20 cents and they in turn sold at a profit for 50 cents.

Uncle then started selling baos at his stall and added more varieties of dimsum. Uncle Jian Cheng is the first to make and sell lotus flower buns in Singapore but lately one hawker has claimed he's the creator of lotus flower buns in Singapore. That started a "Support Uncle Jian Cheng" group.

    1. Uncle is not famous, he's just making a living. The other stall is claiming he's the creator so as to market his baos and make more profit.

    1. No, it's not hard to peel the skin. The top right picture shows a peeled lotus bao. Yes, my mama said must peel the skin because of the pink colouring :P

  5. That's nice but the lotus buns are used for prayers only right? Too much coloring for humans LOL
