Cataract Surgery at Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) - PH

PhotoHunt theme : Patch

Christopher wearing an eye patch and resting after his cataract surgery.

Hubby Christopher had a cataract surgery done at Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC).

For a few months he was seeing triple images. He saw 3 ECLs whenever I appear before him! No wonder he was so stressed. :D

He was seeing multiple lights at traffic junctions and that was becoming dangerous for him to drive.

I accompanied him to Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). We consulted the best surgeon who was swarmed with patients every day so I am not going to post the surgeon's name. The surgeon doesn't even have time for meals. That busy. :P

On the day of the surgery, we arrived at the hospital before 8.30 am and was surprised to see a long queue of patients. The procedure took only 20 minutes. According to Chris, there was no pain but only drowsiness due to the  sedation. He rested for an hour and a nurse taught us how to care for the eye for the next 2 weeks.

He had to wear the eye patch for a week.

looking stoned after the surgery .... Hello, it's your wife!

The next day we return for a review and was scheduled for subsequent reviews after 3 days, 7 days and 1 month.

The natural lens of Chris' eye is removed and replaced with a multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). After the surgery, Chris can now see far and near better without the aid of glasses or contact lens.

  1. Good to hear that hos vision is better after the surgery. Will he need to follow up on this surgery any time in the future?

  3. err...having multifocus lens has its disadvantage for some. Hope your hubby will adjust well.

Looks like you've got to 'babysit' for a week! :)

  4. @ECL,
Buttock always attached to my seat during lunch hour. I bring food to office. If lazy, then it's just banana and boiled eggs. XD

  5. ilene,
Yes, multifocus lens has its disadvantages but hubby is adjusting well. He's an optometrist. :)

I didn't have to babysit him, he was sleeping during most of his sick leave. It's an opportunity for him to rest. :)

  7. @ECL,
That's about the only time I can sit still for one hour. Always running around like headless chicken during office hours. LOL

  8. Ecl,
Nowadays, cataract surgery is almost 100% safe. Now that Christopher has surgery done on his right eye, what about his left eye?

I am trying to imagine you as a headless chicken running around your office. :P

  10. stanley,
Yes, cataract surgery is safe, especially if it is the surgeon who operated on Chris. His left eye is alright, not necessary to have an op.

Combine that image with an extremely scary face too. And loud voice. I have a scary image at work. I don't tolerate nonsense. LOL

  15. Amazed to learn that cataract surgery only takes 20 minutes! And that that surgeon doesn't have time to eat -- he should take better care of himself!! ;O

  17. Yes, cataract surgery is safe, it is complicated only if the cataract is in its advanced stage.

Multifocal Intra Ocular Implant (IOL) is still new technology, many of them did not work well. But when I check with the surgeon the lens is by Zeiss, and it had the same design as the multi-focal contact lens, which I confidently fitted on my patients.

It worked well, I only need mild visual correction for my left eye, I basically do not need any glasses. One of the things that amaze the surgeon was, I have very high contrast sensitivity vision.

I am slightly at a young age to develop cataract, but in many parts of the world, we do have congenital cataract, even babies do have cataract. I would also expect cataract to develop within the next six years for my left eyes, from my own statistic.

  29. Hi Christopher:

My father’ (aged 62 with Phaco and high blood pressure and sugar) is right eye is badly affected by cataract and he has been suffering for it for last 5 years. An operation has been mandatory for his eye. Condition of his left eye is not so bad. He is also planning to go to SNEC and we have chosen two doctors (still not decided yet who will be one to operate), Prof Aung Tin and Assoc. Prof Chee Soon Phaik. Could you please tell which doctor should I choose? As I live in Bangladesh, we don’t have idea about it. It would be very appreciated if you could suggest me your doctor’s name as I’m really anxious about the surgery.

  30. Hi I am a 19 year old who has cataracts in her left eye. Can you kindly divulge the name of your surgeon please? I really want my op to go smoothly

  31. For those who wants to consult the good surgeon, please email me for the name.

The surgeon is too busy to handle a surge in numbers of new requests. Hope for your understanding.

    Wishing everyone good health!

    Regards
    ECL
