eastcoastlife the smart alec! ish.

My foreign friends ask me, 'What's a youtiao?'. Well, this is it.

Dough fritter. You can eat it on its own. You can dunk it in coffee or hot chocolate or hot soya bean milk. We sometimes add it to our famous Bak Kut Teh (Pork Rib Soup) or porridge. I would also spread cuttlefish paste on it & deep fried it, then coat it in mayonnaise sweeten with a little condense milk.

I remember a silly story when I was in my teens.

During my secondary school years, my classmates & I would spend time at a public library near our school. We would be in the Reference Room, doing research for our numerous projects. We would be eating when the librarians were not looking. We would challenge one another to bring bigger food items.

One day, I gleefully brought out a youtiao. My idiotic classmates scattered. I was caught sitting alone like an idiot at a big table, holding up the damned, limp youtiao. Basket, sabo me. I was the model student in school, okay? And the pet of every teacher who taught me. Those idiots.

But again, I was trying to be a smart alec. Who would think of bringing yu cha kuay? So stupid!!!! Anyway, I won. hehehe.....

Where are my secondary school classmates now?

If I see you idiots again, I'm going to stuff youtiao into your mouths. All of you didn't eat my youtiao then.

  19. Hi ECL, please pardon me, I can catch the humour behind this post? Am I too serious? What makes your classmate scatter when you brought a youtian?

  21. oceanskies,
My classmates purposely scattered to get me into trouble! Knowing the librarian would be alerted if they suddenly made a big move.

The scampering and running caused a commotion that brought the librarian to this silly goose who was still holding the youtiao!

  22. Ah, I see. Thanks for enlightening. These classmates can leave you in a lurch.
