The Singapore Arts Festival is one of the leading international arts festivals with a distinctive Asian flavour. Established as a national celebration for the arts, it offers a myriad showcase of world-class and internationally-acclaimed arts productions. The Festival turns 30 this year.
On the night of 30th May, hubby and I attended a rare double bass ensemble performance by d'Bassists at the Esplanade. The performance was held in conjunction with Singapore Arts Festival 2007. d'Bassists is one of Singapore's only existing and performing double bass quartet comprising undergraduates, alumni and guest members of the NUS Symphony Orchestra.
In this unique performance, classical and contemporary pieces were played on the double bass. Berlin's Ragtime and Solomon's Sentimental Bossa were featured.
We experienced the fun and versatility of the double bass and were treated to a hands-on session later. The double bass is bulky and heavy. It is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in use.

Hi Eastcoastlife: I realised that your blog voice is very influential. Thank you very much for supporting us and writing about us. I appreciate your kindness. :)
ReplyDeleteeastcoastlife, eastcoastlife.. we've all been talking about you and your shameless self-promoting entries. yes, we editors of Tomorrow.sg do not intend to help you in your endeavour to rise up in 'popularity'. and so you may stop submitting your entries there already.
ReplyDeleteplease, your entries need more substance than this. for a start, if you've noticed, the people who read your blogs don't sound very intelligent. and you're just attracting all the wrong crowd.
oh wait, maybe you just needed random attention. go hot momma!
ah, nice! wish I was there to listen. haven't been to one of these performances in a long time. need to check out what's playing at the Opera House...
ReplyDeleteMay: I hope to have a chance to play for you one day.
ReplyDeleteHi Eastcoastlife: Just wanted to say: If you believe in what you are doing, just do it, like you have always been. This is your blog, and you have the right to decide how you want to use your blog voice. :)
*Hugs*
Sounds like a good night out!

oceanskies,
ReplyDeleteThanks also for your support all this time. I hope I can do more.
I would love to hear you play for me only, one day. That is one of my last wishes.
May,
ReplyDeleteThe double bass is a wonderful instrument. It's amazing how such a monstrous, bulky thingy can make such beautiful music!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteYes, it was. :)
Certainly, it will be my honour to play for you. The last wish sounds serious leh. I hope you are fine? Just tell me when. Ok, I shall take initiative and email you to ask.
ReplyDeleteWould you mind if I don't have a piano accompaniment?
oceanskies,
ReplyDeleteI know you would do it for me! :)

ya... that rude comment was uncalled for.
Hi whirlwind,
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming.
yenjai,
ReplyDeleteyes, I did. :)
awww... oceanskies.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. I had a wonderful time.
Bernard,
ReplyDeleteThe double bass is a really cool musical instrument. I tried playing it but couldn't produce the beautiful music as played by oceanskies. It was a great experience.
Eastcoastlife: It is most likely that you needed more time to learn the double bass before you can play interesting music on the double bass.
ReplyDeleteI take responsibility for not being able to teach you everything that you would need to know to play beautiful music....I can't do that within 5 minutes mah...so I can't expect you to learn within 5 minutes either.
It took me....eh...15 years.....but I started taking regular formal lessons only a year ago...
By the way, in case you don't know, this is the link to d'Bassists. You can view more photos there.
