Eating from a Garbage Bin - Photo Hunt

It was lunch time, a woman with a sleeping toddler on her lap was eating from a garbage bin on a busy street in Shenzhen, China.

Officer workers just walked past her. I was shocked when a few office ladies even spat at her.

I gave her whatever money I had on me that day.

Later I learnt that she was a con-artist. She had been doing this for a living in this busy city.

I was scolded for being sympathetic to beggars and called 'stupid' for being so easily conned.*Huh!?*

Why would a human being eat from a garbage bin if she has a choice? Would you eat from a garbage bin just to make a few bucks?

(I gave her US$80+, probably the biggest amount she had ever received.)

For the story, read these two posts.

Investors got the Blues - PhotoHunt

PhotoHunt theme : Blue

A lowly-educated cousin was misled into putting her life-savings into a high-risk financial product. She is in her fifties, a blue-collar worker, does not understand English. She holds 2 jobs, scrimped and saved for 30 years to accumulate S$100,000.

Her money was initially placed in a Fixed Deposit but a Relationship Manager sold her the high-risk financial product, promising her higher returns but did not mention about the risks involved.

My cousin was asked to put her signature on blank forms and the Relationship Manager filled in her particulars and answered the questions on the Fact Finding/Analysis Sheet on her behalf. Yes, she is too naive stupid.

But this is Singapore. The ordinary citizens trust that the authorities have stringent controls and regulations in place. Who would expect such things to happen?

The redemption value of that product has been calculated to be zero. The news came as a bolt from the blue.

I was with my cousin for the closed door DBS Dialogue Session on the failed financial product, High Notes 5. All the investors were angry and many elderly ladies were in tears.

Aggrieved investors remain dissatisfied with DBS despite being informed that those who have invested up to S$100,000 (as opposed to the current limit of S$50,000) can take their case to the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre (FIDReC).

Rajan Raju, Managing Director and Head of Consumer Banking at DBS Bank and the bank's independent external adviser, Gerald Ee, met the investors.

My cousin was given an investor complaint form, which establishes among other things if there was mis-selling, to fill. DBS will review it on a case-by-case basis.

DBS Bank has said it will review every High Notes 5 case, and its investor will know the outcome of the resolution process by the end of the year.

Legal advice was against pursuing a class action suit. It’s an uphill task to prove mis-selling in a court of law. It’s our word against the Relationship Manager’s.

Who are responsible?

After the dialogue session, I met several investors from Malaysia, China, Taiwan and Korea. These days, I have been helping my cousin's elderly, uneducated colleagues and neighbours who have invested in such high-risk financial products to write complaints.

I get the blues seeing the elderly not being able to eat and sleep over the loss of their life-savings. Some have fallen ill. I hope there would not be suicides.

I hope more educated people could come out to help these vulnerable investors. Just help them to fill in their investor complaint forms in English or Chinese. There will be a meeting for investors at :

Scary Food - PhotoHunt

PhotoHunt theme : Scary

Fancy a tarantula or an insect as a snack?

Imagine the gooey stuff squishing in your mouth when you bite into it..... and having bits of its legs stuck in between your teeth.

On Wang Fu Jin Road in Beijing, you can find stalls selling these insects as snack food.

I was scared when I first saw these creepy crawlies and bugs. My Chinese friends persuaded me to try some of them. I tried a scorpion, a crispy fried worm and a beetle. Honestly, they didn't taste good.

I was told they are nutritious and have very high medicinal values. Some of them have become delicacies and are highly sought after. I'm glad I don't have to eat them, to the poor in some parts of China, insects are their alternative source of protein.

Lazy EastCoastLife - PhotoHunt

Once upon a time, there was a lazy girl called ECL. She was so lazy that she needed to be fed, bathed and waited upon hand and feet by her mother.

One day Mommy had to visit her ailing grandmother in a neighbouring country. ECL was too lazy to move, so her mother thought of a way to keep her from starving. She strung some savoury buns together and hung them round ECL's neck. All she needed to do was to eat a bun when she was hungry. What a brilliant idea!

So off Mommy went.

5 days later when Mommy came home, she found ECL dead. What!? How?

Lazy ECL was just too lazy to move the b***** buns!! grrrr........

Have a happy weekend! ^-^

Sad Memories at Old Ford Factory - PhotoHunt

PhotoHunt theme : Sad

For 3 years and 8 months, Singapore was under Japanese rule. The Japanese Occupation was the darkest years in Singapore history. Sad memories are now preserved by Memories at Old Ford Factory

In front of the museum, a granite stone has this insrciption :

以史為鉴

"夫以銅為鏡, 可以正衣冠;
以古為鏡, 可以知興替;
以人為鏡, 可以明得失."

唐, <<貞觀政要>>

Translated in English, it reads:
"Taking History as a Lesson. (from Emperor Tang Taizong)

With a bronze mirror, one can see whether he is properly attired
With history as a mirror, one can understand the rise and fall of a nation
With man as a mirror, one can see whether he is right or wrong"

Source: Zhenguan Zhengyao

Take time to reflect on the consequences of war as you take in the inspiring words.

Japanese treatment of POWs

Entertainment for the Japanese soldiers was to throw babies into the air and catch them on the tip of their bayonets. They killed the innocents as their past-time. You can hear the oral history accounts of witnesses and victims.

How could men behave like beasts? It makes me sad to see our own kind treating one another like dirt.

Walk through the gallery to find important lessons of creativity, adaptability and entrepreneurship from the annals of history, displayed by those who lived through the Occupation years.

EastCoastLife at World's First Night Race - PH

PhotoHunt Theme : View

Spectacular view of the action at Turn 23

The Ministry of Trade and Industry hosted VIPs, including Ministers and MPs, to the 2008 Formula One SingTel Singapore Grand Prix in the Temasek Suite at the Paddock Club™.The Temasek Suite offers views of the pit straight and Turns 23. There was fine dining and great wines.

My ticket to a historical moment in Singapore...

EastCoastLife was a part of history and witnessed first-hand Formula 1™ cars racing at night for the first time. From my dining table, I enjoyed a spectacular view of the action as the cars reach speeds up to 300 km/h right in front of my eyes! I also stepped out to the private balcony to enjoy the electric atmosphere and had a whiff of the burning tires! :)

EastCoastLife with power ladies Minister Lim Hwee Hua and MP Cynthia Phua

From my prime location offering unrivalled views, I watched the race unfold with all the drama that Formula 1™ delivers. Many F1 drivers have never raced in the night, so there were a few accidents.

All the guests took a walk down the Pit Lane after the first Practice Session, taking photos of the garages and the race car teams at work.

Everyone rushed to the window whenever a race car crashed...

Singapore Grand Prix is the world's first Formula 1™ race to be held at night and the first street race in Asia. 10 teams zoomed around the 5.067 km long street circuit which offers multiple overtaking opportunities as well as fast and challenging turns.

I smelled burning tires (and sweaty men!) from the balcony!

Singapore is aiming to be the 'Monaco of Asia', this iconic event will put it in the global spotlight. It hopes to entice the super-wealthy who come to the race to consider setting up homes here.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan and lovely NMP Eunice Olsen

Host and several VIPs toasting to the success of Singapore Grand Prix!

It costs a person several thousand dollars to watch this night race in Temasek Suite at the Paddock Club. But not any one with money could get a ticket to my event. What a memorable and awesome experience for me!

eastcoastlife lost - PhotoHunt

Theme : String (s)

Sorry to disappoint my voters and supporters.

Fun photos with other Singapore bloggers

Singapore's first major Blog Awards ended with strings of surprises and disappointments. As in all competitions, there are winners..... so there will be losers. Don't take it too hard. We had fun.

Congratulations to all the winners!!

Congratulations to all the finalists! *hugs*

Matured bloggers coolinsider, ieat, ECL, Lam Chun See and kiddo Jaymes

At the event, meeting the people behind the blogs I read was wonderful. And I was very happy to see my old friends again. I had some touching moments when bloggers who had wronged me, came up to apologise. It takes great courage. I'm impressed. I hope you will support my project and let's work towards a better community of bloggers.

Singapore's National Treasure, Mr Tan Swie Hian

Meeting the celebrities and having photos with them was another highlight of the event. My wish to own a special piece of Tan Swie Hian's art was dashed but I get to meet him in person. I hope to see him again at his museum. :)

I was fluttering around the hall, talking to friends and sponsors and taking photos with celebrities. Sorry if I missed anyone. I didn't mean to ignore you.... and it's definitely not a snub.

I won a Sinemaniac membership worth S$80 and 2 T-shirts. haha.... Thanks to Sinema.

I went home with trophies of my own. I have wasted too much time these two months and it's time to concentrate on my projects. Bloggers and potential sponsors who have listened to my presentation, I'll get back to you asap. The Singapore Blogosphere is going to get exciting.......

My Little Blogging Space

My blogger friend Gattina wants bloggers to show a picture of their blogging place! Your room or bed or whatever space(s) or place(s) you have to write your blog posts.

Most of the time, when I'm home, I blog in my Study Room or Entertainment Room. My Study Room is in a mess right now, due to the amount of work I have taken on and a secret project, so I shall not show it.

My heaven!!

Watching my favourite idols or world news while doing my post .... having tea and snacks.... taking a power nap.... sing karaoke...... this is one of my favourite places for blogging. Can you imagine me singing and dancing while typing furiously away. hahaha....

Now, I want to see a photo of your little blogging space. Leave me the link to your post in my comment and I'll give you a linky love by adding you to this post. :)

Preparing to live life anew

I don't make new year resolutions as I don't keep them. haha.... I have a thirst for life and when I come across new and exciting things, I do try them.

Asians are used to working all their life, they don't know how to have fun. So when they come to retirement age, many don't know what to do, with so much time on their hands.

It is important to keep mind and body active. I'm rediscovering hobbies that I once loved, learning line dancing and a new language. At the same time, I'm making new friends. Life is filled with many wonderful experiences. It is never too late to learn and explore.

Besides having fun, don't forget to plan for your financial future.

These senior citizens posed for a picture before their cat-walk during SICEX.

To market, to market on a gleaming new tricycle!

Floor Ball for senior citizens, maybe when I'm in my 70s. Now I can achieve 70% of the stunts in the movie Lust, Caution. hahaha...........
