Pulau Ubin Day Trip - PhotoHunt

PhotoHunt theme : Quaggy/ Red

Gathering some foreign students, another teacher and I brought them to Pulau Ubin. After a 10-min bumboat ride (S$2.50 each) and then hiring a van, we arrived at the Chek Jawa Wetlands where we found Singapore's richest ecosystem. Six different types of habitats are found in Chek Jawa. It was a fun and unique experience for the young foreigners walking through this quaggy terrain.

The students found some marine creatures like crabs, mantis shrimps and starfish during low tide in this shallow lagoon. They screamed with joy whenever they found something. :D We told them only to take photos of the marine creatures and not to catch them.

The Coastal Boardwalk and natural Rocky Shore looks barren but many living creatures are hidden beneath the rocks or wedged in the crevices. We had fun looking for barnacles, crabs and shell-boring snails called drills.

It was an extremely hot day. The students were gradually being 'baked into red lobsters' under the hot sun. haha....

Not wanting them to get sick, we brought the reluctant students into the cool shade. The students had a quick lesson at the mangrove swamp before we gave them an assignment. I did some exploring while they did their work.

This mangrove palm called 'Nypa fruticans' has a large fruit that contains many small seeds, what we commonly called 'attap chee' which can be found in our local delicacy - ice kachang. Pleasantly surprise to discover this fruit here.

Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, my stduents and I walked on rustic roads under swaying coconut trees, exploring trails in rubber plantations. The air in Pulau Ubin is fresher and the sights and sounds are so soothing to one's soul! Once in a while, we need to get out of the city to appreciate the nature on this beautiful island.

    1. Don't go too deep into the mangrove swamp lah. I dare not let the kids go too near the mangrove swamp in case accidents happen. They took pictures to upload on their Facebook for their friends and families to see. :)

    1. Yes. I was so happy to discover them. I dare not pick the fruit as it might be illegal to do so. I wanted so much to see how the inside of the fruit looks. Am trying to find a way to purchase the fruit :)

  7. Hi ECL, what a cool place for discovery, education and exploration for children. Your photos are beautiful. The fruit looks interesting. It grows from a ground plant just like a pineapple. I love pineapples. Maybe I would like this fruit too.

    Have a great weekend.
