Singapore, the Garden City - PH

We have an Annual Tree-planting Day!

The usual remark my overseas friends tell me when they first visit me is "Singapore is so clean and green!" Almost 50 per cent of Singapore is covered by greenery.

The luxuriant greenery that we enjoy in Singapore took some 40 years of strong political will and the sweat and toil of many to sustain the effort.

Towering palm trees lined the Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade

Four decades ago, the former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who identified a green Singapore as a key competitive factor in attracting foreign investments to the country, was the driving force behind
Singapore's development into a Garden City.

Some 40 years on, our Government is just as committed to the programme. Over the years, NParks' mission has evolved from realising a vision for a Garden City to creating A City in a Garden where the island's seamless green infrastructure of parks and streetscapes play an essential part of Singaporeans' lives, homes, workplaces and playgrounds.

I am so looking forward to the opening of our mega-project, The Gardens by the Bay at the end of this year. Upon the full completion of the three gardens, some 101 hectares of reclaimed land at Marina Bay will be transformed into a lush paradisiacal garden. The Gardens will feature the Super Trees: ranging from heights of 25 to 50 metres, these structures will tower over the natural canopies and support a variety of plant life that will enshroud the Super Trees like a living skin.

  4. That is a completely different attitude from Australia's. Cut them all down seems to be our creed. Turn them all into poor quality woodchips! GRRRRRRRRRRR
