Caged Animal and Humans - PH

PhotoHunt theme : Cage(d)

On a holiday in Bali, I discovered wild animals that are caged in a local resident's home. When the owner opened the door to feed his lions, the thought of them escaping from their cages made me nervous.

At a rehabilitation fair organised by the Singapore Prison Service last year, visitors were attracted to a mock-up prison cell. What I found amusing was they were queuing to take pictures.  :D

I was invited to a tour of our Singapore prison in year 2009. The visit provides an insight on the regime inmates undergo and what is life like in prison.

In a tiny cell (6ft by 15 ft) with one squatting toilet, one small window and a closed door, 3 or 4 inmates sleep on hard concrete floor. They are only given a very thin straw mat.The small window facing the door is just high enough for one to look through their cell window and distinguish day from night

Each inmate gets a plastic box containing two small blankets, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, a small pail, a drinking mug, and a face towel. During meal times, water is provided .

There is an hour for exercise and showers daily . Inmates are locked in for the rest of the 23 hours. Meals are brought to the inmates. Breakfast is at 8am, lunch at noon and dinner as early as 4pm.

Life in prison is harsh. Cherish your freedom, keep out of prison.

  2. Caged lions in a private home. I sure won't want to be their neighbours!

And imagine being confined in a small space. o.O

  3. The mock-up prison looks decent; but I'm sure it's FAR from the real thing... You are right, we should cherish our freedom and keep out of prison!

  8. Those poor animals, looks like they don't have much room to run. I will remember your advice to stay away from prison. :) It reminds me how so many tourists go to visit Alcatraz here, but if you were a real prisoner, you don't want to be there.

  9. this is a good deterrent to crime...giving people an idea how life in prison is. perhaps a visit to prison should be included in high school students' field trips.:p

  13. Great choices for the theme. Thanks for visiting mine and to answer your questions, the chickens are kept for eggs. They are like pets and would never get eaten but their eggs are enjoyed.

  16. Goodness, all those photos tell sad stories of being "caged". Maybe the lions are better off than the humans.

    Happy weekend ECL.

  18. Your post is very interesting. Lions in someone's home? I would be afraid. Prison is a place no one should want to go. Thanks for coming by to see my caged possums... they were taken to a lady who cares for them. If there had been no babies, I'm sure she would have met a different fate. My husband could not kill her and the babies.

  19. My comment yesterday was apparently too long for Blogger - can you imagine that?
I wanted to say that with the world being so enlightened it is long past the time of any animal being kept caged up. It is far too cruel!!!!
Perhaps the same could be said of many prisoners. There is no choice other than to lock up violent offenders to protect the rest of society. Most prisoners however, are not violent and locking them up appears to serve little purpose. It certainly doesn't teach them not to re-offend. Some become criminals because of poor parenting, some to keep up with their peers, some accidentally, some are in the wrong place at the wrong time, some are plainly innocent and some are a puzzle to us all. We do need a new way of addressing the problem because prison for minor offences simply doesn't work in the majority of instances!
Fingers crossed that my comment isn't too long this time. :)
