Vertical Garden - PH

PhotoHunt theme : Vertical

On a trip to Bangkok, the vertical garden in a shopping mall caught my attention. Seeing the walls of flowers and herbs gave me an idea.

I have dreams of growing beautiful blooms and a herb garden. With a tiny garden. I could only choose one.  But a vertical garden  .....

allows me to grow my plants on walls! Yippee!!

It becomes addictive .... I'm covering up every available wall. :D

I would love to have this beautiful ornamental shrub in my garden! *drools*

Now I have to rack my brains for a solution ......

  1. Hi ECL,

This is very interesting idea! Perhaps I could try to plant flowers vertically as well. When it's spring time, I am sure the wall will be covered with beautiful colors!

The elephants shrub is lovely too, but I don't think I have time to maintain the structure ;) Happy gardening!

  2. A vertical garden is a great idea for us living in limited space. :)

  3. Animal shaped shrubs are cool! And growing greens on the wall is a great idea.

  4. Once again, you are way ahead of me! I haven't even decided what to do for the PH-challenge! But your take on the theme is bell-clear! Vertical gardens!
And even in my part of the world we are beginning to think about our gardens.
You made a comment on one of my posts about how people living in colder areas look forward to spring, whereas you who live in a warm or tropical area wish for some cooler weather.
I can comfort you. I have lived in a hot area too, and know what it is like to long for a little shade and a cool breeze.
Actually it's the darkness of the northern winter that bothers me most.
    Happy Weekend!

  6. That elephant shrub sculpture is amazing. I would love to see this garden in person.

  7. That is a brilliant idea ECL? How about watering it though? Does it all run straight down leaving the ones at the top thirsty? I'm sure there is a solution.

    Happy weekend to you.

  8. Oooo... I saw Dumbo in the garden. Having a fairy tale garden would be nice. It might even attract Mr. Thackery Earwicket, the white hare from Alice in the Wonderland.. :P

  10. bluecrystaldude,
You are right the walls come to life when the flowers bloom!

The elephant shrub sculpture is not easy to maintain for an amateur like me. I need an artist. :)

  11. Lina,
I used to have several hanging pots of plants but ran out of space too. Now with this solution, I can have a vertical vegetable or herb garden. Hooray!

  12. MeiTeng,
The sculptured shrubs need regular maintenance. Not an easy task for people like me. :)

  13. Anna,
I have to post my PH early as I'm usually busy on Saturdays. It's a challenge to come up with photos and story for the weekly theme and I look forward to this meme every week. I enjoy reading your posts and your take on PH too.

I've never lived in a cold country but I would like to give it a try one day and experience what you are going through. :)

  14. Doreen,
The photo was taken outside a hotel near the 4-face Buddha in Bangkok. The landscape was beautifully designed but these elephants caught my eye.

The Thais are very creative people. Even their food is too beautiful to be eaten.

  16. I admire a plant enthusiast who actually grows them. Me... I just like going hiking among plants in country parks! ;b

  17. Poetic Shutterbug,
I took this photo on the grounds of Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in Bangkok. I don't know if they are still there.

  18. jmb,
I have to make a careful selection of plants. The soil at the top tends to dry out faster, so I grow plants that don't require constant watering.

I'm careful not to water too much, using a watering can or a spray to moisten the soil.

  19. Criz Lai,
I need a larger garden to create a Fairy tale one which is not possible for poor me. :D

I want the garden to attract handsome men, not a hare! lol

  20. Whitemist,
Yes, I need to choose the flowering plants carefully so as to create beautiful pieces. As for the herb garden, it is also a challenge, I'm still experimenting.

  21. Your home sculptured shrubs of herbs look very interesting! But for someone like me without the green thumbs, I'll get more weeds than herbs for sure! :P

p/s: Leg still not recovered? Don't strain by walking around too much. Hurry up and get well soon. Someone's B'day coming hor? :P

  29. napaboaniya,
I don't have green thumbs too, I have lost count of the number of plants that were murdered by me. :P

My ankle is recovering but not fast enough. grrr....

I missed my 20th wedding anniversary and I probably would miss my birthday too. :(

  30. Carver,
I'm so glad to discover the vertical garden. Now my goal is to grow my own greens and be self sufficient.

  31. ipanema,
Try it. If you have a bare wall on the balcony, start with a small square area of green hanging plants, then proceed to the whole wall.

  32. ewok1993,
Vertical gardens are getting popular these days. With the campaign of making our environment greener, buildings are growing plants on their rooftops and exterior walls.

  33. ian,
Many private and commercial buildings in Singapore are beginning to cultivate vertical gardens not only to beautify but to conserve energy and become greener.

  46. What beautiful elephant topiary! There are mainly birds sculptured in our country although some places to extend to many varieties of animals. This is the very first elephant I have seen though. You can buy the wire frames for some of the simple shapes to plant your bush underneath but if you are nimble fingered then perpaps you could sculpture your own wire frame and make a shape for your own garden ... what about a spiral tree?

As usual you have provided us with some beautiful pictures and a few dreams to dwell on!

    Have a wonderful weekend!! :)
