At the Wake of Singapore's First Terror Victim - WS

On Sunday night, my husband and I accompanied the Adviser to Marine Parade GRC, MP Lim Biow Chuan to the wake of Ms Lo Hwei Yen.

Ms Lo, a 28-year old lawyer, was among the 24 Oberoi Hotel hostages found dead in the Mumbai terror attack. The first Singaporean to die in a terrorist attack, she was shot in the head and abdomen.

Ms Lo was the daughter-in-law of Mr Stanley Puhaindran, a well-known and respected grassroots leader in Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong's Marine Parade ward. SM Goh visited Mr Puhaindran as soon as he learnt about Ms Lo's death. SM Goh was at Ms Lo's wedding last year. She had just celebrated her first wedding anniversary.

President S R Nathan and PM Lee Hsien Loong send their condolences to the bereaved family.

Ms Lo's body was flown back on Sunday evening. At the wake, which is held at the Lo's family home, a large projector showed photos of Ms Lo in happier times. She was a pretty and lively girl. Ms Lo's funeral will be held on Thursday.

Her death shocked the nation. It brings home to all of us that Terrorism knows no boundaries. It could happen to any one of us, anywhere.

All Singaporeans share the family's pain. May Hwei Yen rest in peace.

  2. Oh how sad for this young woman's family, and for all of you in Singapore. For all of us, really, as this young woman's death. It reminds me of John Donne's poem, For Whom The Bell Tolls:

    "...Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind."

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I'm going to blog about this.

  4. That's horrible. I read from Channel News Asia that she was coerced into relaying the militants' message to S'pore MFA before being shot. Not sure whether that's true.

The last moment must have been terrifying....
