Silver Industry Conference and Exhibition 2008 (SICEX)

The increasing baby boomer generation presents a sizeable and lucrative market as one in 3 Singapore residents is above the age of 45. I visited the first-ever silver industry exhibition in Singapore on Saturday.

There are 4 main zones :
- health and wellness,
- travel and leisure,
- finance and investment,
- technology.

There were over 100 booths featuring useful products and services for the elderly.

Wheeled walkers with seats and even a basket or bag for carrying purchases.

Keep an active mind by playing games like Chinese Chess, sudoku, scrabble, mahjong.... etc.

The Games and Hobbies section where visitors tried out the latest games and worked up a sweat. Visitors experienced the thrill of playing top-selling, mind stimulating computer games such as Nintendo Wii and the DS handheld console.

Paro the therapeutic robot seal provides 3 types of effects: relaxing and instigates communication in patients and caregivers.

Moods of children and elderly can be improved by interaction with Paro. It has tactile sensors and responds to petting by moving its tail and opening and closing its eyes. It also responds to sounds and can learn a name. It can show emotions such as surprise, happiness and anger. It produces sounds similar to a real baby seal and (unlike a real baby seal) is active during the day and goes to sleep at night. It costs US$4,000. :P

Making our homes more age-friendly prevents mishaps from occurring. A sink that you can adjust its height. Shower seat in the bathroom so you can sit down when you bathe. Choosing the right furnishings and making minor modifications to the interior design will go a long way towards helping the elderly live more comfortably.

I pick up lots of practical tips from this exhibition. I'm making plans for my golden years. As the saying goes, "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail". I hope to be independent, active and still be able to travel in my old age.

  6. That's a very interesting post. I agree with you about planning. I've helped older family members at the end of their lives and some of the little things make a big difference. I know my throw rugs which slide around really need those sticky tabs on the bottom to keep them in place. Even at my age (50), I don't want to fall if I can possibly avoid it.

  12. the teach,
I have elderly parents-in-law and parents who are weak and sickly. When I was young and able, I didn't realise how vulnerable and helpless we can be when we are old and sick.

I'm trying to find as much information on products and services for the elderly so I could ease my son and future generation of the burden of caring for me when I'm old and sickly.

There are indeed lots of services we could provide for the elderly to make their remaining years as enjoyable as possible.

  21. I think they should make SG more handicapped friendly. Those motorized wheelchairs with baskets should be made cheaper. I see a lot of seniors in the US become very independent with those motorized wheelchairs. They can even go shopping in the supermarket on their own with the basket. Well, but again...space is limited in SG - so maybe it's hard to move around too :O

  27. The silver market is a huge market. So much innovation can go in there. But I hope there is some kind of check and control with people's hard earned money.

Okay, I knew I should invest in a Nintendo Wii today ... thanks, you just gave me a valid reason :)
