dowry jewellery on a grape coloured cloth
PhotoHunt theme : Grape/ Jewellery
A friend's daughter is getting married. The single mother does not have much savings and was feeling down because she could not afford to buy her daughter the traditional "four items of gold" (四点金) as bride dowry. The four items would be a pair of earrings, necklace, ring and bracelet.
Several old-fashioned relatives think that the more gold a bride wears, the more wealth she could bring to the groom's family.
In recent years, I have been reading news of Chinese couples flaunting their wealth on their wedding day. This young lady hung 5 kg of gold jewellery around her neck.
I would be very happy if my daughter-in-law brings 5 kg of gold as dowry when she marries my son. :D
Wow that is an expensive old custom ! I would wear golden fashion jewelry bought on the market for a few Euros, lol ! But I wouldn't say no to a gold covered husband !
ReplyDeleteThe elders in the family still want to keep the custom but the younger generation find gold jewellery too outdated. :)
DeleteThat is an interesting custom, but poor bride who had to lug around all that gold :)
ReplyDeleteMy photo hunt entry for this week
Happy weekend my friend :)
The dowry jewellery consist of a necklace, a ring, a pair of ear rings and a bracelet but the bride in the second picture overdid it. :)
DeleteThat poor woman with 5 kilogrammes of gold on her! Okay, not literally poor but I bet she must have been physically uncomfortable for much of what should have been one of the happiest days of her life! :O
ReplyDeleteProbably her husband needs to give her a neck massage after the dinner. :P
DeletePhew that is a lot of gold!!
ReplyDeleteYes, they better keep it in a safe.
DeleteHi ECL, wow that is an impressive amount of jewelry. I hope she only had to wear them for the ceremony and was able to take them off for the reception. That'a very pretty gown and her hair clips are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend.
An interesting tradition! The jewelry is lovely on the grape cloth. Happy weekend to you.
ReplyDeleteWow, 5kg, a lot and also heavy...
ReplyDeleteOMG the poor bride looks miserable with all that heavy gold weighing her down!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to your friend's daughter, I'm sure her wedding will turn out just great! :)
