Fo Guang Shan Monastery @Kaohsiung, Taiwan - PhotoHunt

Photo Hunt theme : Quiet /Signs

On a chilly January morning, we visited the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan, Fo Guang Shan Monastery.

Built on a hilly site, we took a slow, long climb to reach the various sites on the top of the hill. All was quiet, save for the melodious chirping of birds.

The grounds are very picturesque, and the monastery has a number of museums, shrines, and monuments to see. It's an amazing place ....... so tranquil, so beautiful.

As it was approaching the Lunar New Year, the monastery grounds were scattered with adorable lanterns of little monks. Wish I could stay longer to admire the lighted lanterns at night.

Life-size standup sign in support of Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou

Signs in Taiwan are mainly written in traditional Chinese characters. And since Taiwan was holding its Presidential Election then, several innovative business owners made use of the opportunity to support their favourite Presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou as well as market their products or services.

  8. Really enjoyed checking out this entry. Interesting to see the monastery looking so bereft of visitors. Is it because it's really hard to get to?

  9. The lantern monks are cute! They give a hint of 'fun' to the otherwise quiet and somber mood of the monastery.
