SM Goh exercising with Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan and Halimah Yacob, Deputy Secretary General, NTUC
While many people in less developed countries are worried about when their next meal will be, Singapore residents are facing weight problems. Almost 11% of them are obese and over the past 6 years, the figure has been climbing. Obesity is declared to be a global epidemic by the World Health Organization. *gulp*
Launched by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign 2010 aims to promote a nation of healthy and happy people through healthy-eating and regular exercise.
More than 1,000 visitors participated in the Great Singapore Workout at Vivocity, Amphitheater (Level 3) on a humid Sunday morning.
To encourage individuals and their friends and families to adopt a healthy lifestyle, a new initiative "Health Promoting Mall" was also launched. 50 malls have signed up and they promote healthier meal choices at their food courts or restaurants.Weekly exercise such as mall walks or mall aerobics could be hosted by the malls.
My sedentary lifestyle and not engaging in any form of sports or exercise is making me obese. I like the idea of mall walks after doing my banking or grocery shopping or after a healthy meal at my favourite mall. I might meet like-minded people to fight obesity together. :D

With all the activities and events you go to ECL, I certainly don't think you are sedentary, much less obese!
ReplyDeleteThe leader must lead us to a healthier lifestyle! :D But how often are we doing this on our own?
ReplyDeleteExercise is very important. We must make time for exercise though we are busy.
ReplyDeleteAs always a beautiful and very interesting post.
ReplyDeleteHello ECL, I am slowly but surely coming back to blogging and I just had to stop over and say hi and I have missed you very much!
Hope you are doing well..hugs, Jackie:-)
Guess what? I may be in Singapore in February! I will let you know when I am certain!
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly the same here ! People are far too fat ! They don't move enough and eat too much.
ReplyDeleteI eat a lot too, but I move, at least my tongue !
Ecl,
ReplyDeleteYou obese? No lah! A lot of women would love to have your shape and figure.
This is so important for everyone to do and especially when we get older. So very important. Hubby and I exercise every morning.
ReplyDeleteHave a terrific day. :)
Lina,
ReplyDeleteI have cut down on many activities and attending functions due to my busy schedule. I exercise my mouth more.... eating and chatting. haha.....
Tekkaus,
ReplyDeleteSeveral of our leaders are indeed good role models when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle.
SG short stories,
ReplyDeleteI know I should make time for exercise.... the heart is willing but the body is weak. :P
Jackie!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to see you! How wonderful to see you back to blogging. I miss you very much too.
Maribeth,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Singapore! I will be glad to meet up with you. Please contact me.
Gattina,
ReplyDeletehahahaha.... you move your tongue only? I'm glad I move more than that. :D
stanley,
ReplyDeleteI have put on weight and I'm not a pretty sight these days. :P
Sandee,
ReplyDeleteI should learn from you and start exercising while I'm young....
First I have to overcome the reluctance to move my butt. :P
Well they all look as though they are trying very hard to keep fit.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find so surprising is if you ever catch a glimpse of people in the 1960's and 70's - how thin people looked and even so called fat people were in many cases fairly average sizes compared to today! So whatever's going on? It was commonplace for people to have a good sized breakfast followed by mid-morning snack then a lunch and often an afternoon snack, then evening meals and in many cases supper too. Now we appear to eat far far less .... and yet everyone seems to be heavier .....
Exercise is good for our overall health. We need to be motivated with activities like this. Walking is good enough if u r too lazy or busy to exercise ECL.*_*
ReplyDeleteYou are far far far far away from being obese. Your lifestyle seems so healthy and you are so full of energy going here and there instead of quietly sitting at home :)
ReplyDeletei don't play sports and i don't exercise at all :P
ReplyDeletehaha...it's good to start somewhere, better than not doing anything about our health right? :)
