Farewell, Mrs Lee Kuan Yew

Farewell, Mrs Lee

I was having dinner with friends when I received the first text  message of Mrs Lee's demise. Everyone at the table turned silent when I announced the news.

This morning I went with grassroot leaders from Mountbatten Constituency to Sri Temasek (the official residence of the Prime Minister) at the Istana to pay our last respects to the late Mrs Lee Kuan Yew.

Present at the wake this morning were PM Lee Hsien Loong, his wife Ho Ching and his brother Lee Hsien Yang.

For the past two days, thousands of people including foreign visitors have turned up to pay their respects. At the entrance of the Istana, buses were ready to ferry them to Sri Temasek.

Mrs Lee's passing is a loss to Singapore. She was an exceptional woman who had contributed much to our country in her own quiet ways. I did not know much about her until these few days when I read the tributes in the papers.

MM Lee and Mrs Lee are well-known to be a very loving couple. We hope MM Lee would be strong and take care of himself. He is very much on the thoughts and prayers of many Singaporeans.

Today is the last day the public can pay respects to Mrs Lee. Tomorrow, a private funeral will be held.
