Painted Fish - PH

PhotoHunt theme : Painted

Molly Fish with numbers tattooed on them

To appeal to consumers, some ornamental aquarium fish are artificially coloured, They are called Painted fish.

The fish are sedated before they are injected with a bright fluorescent colour dye, so they feel no pain. Alternatively they are dipped into a dye solution, or fed fish dyed food.

This gives the fish a brighter colour and they look more attractive to consumers. The colouring of the fish fades away after six months.

These fishes with single digit tattooed on them are very popular during Chinese New Year. The consumers think that keeping these fish bring prosperity.

Is it necessary to hurt the fishes just for quick monetary gains?

  1. the painted fishes are hilarious! for the numbers are way too "forcefully" written. XD

  2. That last sentence's exactly my sentiment too!

  3. levian,
    The poor fish! :(
The tattoos are done in Thailand. The number tattooed on the fish is not meant to look pretty.

  4. Mei Teng,
Ahhhh! Your comment is 1 minute after levian's!

The fishes are living things too. They could feel pain.

I saw dyed chicks for sale once. That is not right.

  5. waiting kitty,
It is cruel. People buy the 4D fish during Chinese New Year and after the colours have faded, they are probably thrown away or left to die.

    ReplyDelete
  6. You defiantly don't find them in the North Sea :-)

  7. RennyBA,
I don't want to eat a coloured Norwegian Salmon. :)

  8. I just get to know about this from yr post. 把快乐建立在鱼的痛苦上! Another way of making $$$ **Sigh**

  9. hi ECL, this is interesting! i didnt know they are doing stuff like this to the fishes. poor thing!

    ReplyDelete
  10. poor fish.the painted fish looks attractive but I feel pity for them.

    ReplyDelete
  11. it sure is cruel doing that to the fishes. they are way cooler to look at without all those "artificial" numbers on them.

  12. Doreen!!
    So long no see!
So happy to see you again. :)

I don't buy ornamental fish even though my Fengshui Master recommended me to rear gold fish. I know I won't be able to take good care of them or keep them alive.

  13. Mibebepreciosio,
    Hi. Thanks for visiting.

I saw these fishes being sold at a famous fish farm last year. They were very popular. Sold out very fast. :(

  14. Jean Chia,
    Hi!
I'm happy to see you here. :)

The poor fishes are being made to undergo such cosmetic changes before being sold. I guess these fishes don't last long too.

    Happy Friday, dear!

  15. Joe-ann,
The colours of the painted fish are more vibrant and beautiful, therefore attracting more consumers to buy them. Kids get excited upon seeing the pretty colourful fishes.

  16. levian,
With the tattooed numbers on their bodies, the fish looked weird.

I don't keep any ornamental fish for fear of seeing them die at my hands. :P

  17. I think the fish would look great without the added colors. We can be very thoughtless sometimes. Have a wonderful weekend :)

  18. Oh poor little fishies;(

I also saw a monkey in Malaysia on our daytour that was caged which I find so sad - he's just there I guess because the farm owner thinks it would entertain people.

    It's just sad.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I too think it's cruel to tattoo a fish, fish are beautiful without having to be tattooed. i felt sorry for them.

    my 'painted' is up.

    ReplyDelete
  20. wow..
i still dont get it - how they "tattoo" the fish's scales?
    hmm..interesting though..
    keep it up! =D

    ReplyDelete
  21. Like almost everybody above I too think its senseless and sad.Not natural at all.Injecting or feeding disturbing substances into the fish could perhaps effect their longevity and weaken their defenses. This seems like a money making gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I won't be happy to be painted without my consent.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Rosidah,
The fishes are looking pretty without the tattoos.

For more sales, some traders would do anything. They think the fishes can feel no pain.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jade,
The poor monkey! They are not domesticated animals. Even dogs are not caged or chained up in homes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Life Ramblings,
    I was late by a minute. :D

The fish are lovely as they are. No need to dye them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. kenwooi,
The traders inject a pigment into the bodies of the fish. The fish is very small and the scales are thin enough for the needle to penetrate.

    ReplyDelete
  27. jean,
It is a money making gimmick. And it is not illegal.

The fish are not supposed to live long, they are bred for the festive season. :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. oceanskies,
The fish are at the mercy of the breeders. There is no ways they can object or run. lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. keeyit,
The dye is injected with a syringe into the fish's body. :(

  30. Sick Sick Sick!!!!!!!! These aquarium owners and those that buy them are pretty sick sick sick!!!
These clowns should tattoo some numbers on their OWN faces and stand at Singapore Pools for people to randomly guess winning numbers instead! At least provide some entertainment to those in Q.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Those first fish were absolutely amazing... love it!

    ReplyDelete
  32. They look beautiful but the story behind the looks is terrible...never heard of this, ECL.
    Happy hunting and weekend anyways!!
    My PH is posted

    ReplyDelete
  33. Napaboaniya,
Wahhhh! Why get so worked up!? :P

This is a sales tactic to sell more fish and earn more profits.... at the expense of other forms of life. Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Expat traveller,
They are born beautiful, no need to touch up. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mar,
The fish are probably not exported to Western countries where the animal lovers would certainly protest.

    Happy photo hunting, Mar!

    ReplyDelete
  36. For me,it is a wrong reason to buy these fishes. Then what? They got thrown away...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Poor fish! LOL But it's cute anyhow! :D

    ReplyDelete
  38. Great take on the theme ECL. I noticed others are concerned about the fish being painted. I had the same reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't like the idea of painting the fishes. They are beautiful on their own skin or scale..hehe. Well, some people really do a lot of things out of ordinary for something else.

    Have a good day/night!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think it's cruel to do these to the fish. Some do die during the process.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow ... what a strange thing people want to do to fish ... lol.

It's so artificial. Why do people want to tattoo the fish?!

    ReplyDelete
  42. OMG, that must be true. I bought a gold fish that's orange but became whitish when it grew big.

    What a great entry.

    ReplyDelete
  43. wow...they are unique fishes. thanks drop at my ph post

    ReplyDelete
  44. hi ecl,

awww i feel so sorry for the poor fishy. hope that this is something that gets reconsidered.

hope things are well dear :) keep cool always xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow, that is horrible, she says shaking her head.
But it did make a suitable post for this theme. Ugh.

    Happy weekend ECL.

    ReplyDelete
  46. the photos are beautiful but it does make me very sad for the fish. :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ouch! I thought it was cruel to have colored chicks... fish now? I even saw a clown colored poodle the other day. I guessed it's best to be natural with God's given colors... Now can someone get my white hair colored black?? LOL!

    http://crizcats.blogspot.com/

p.s. I'm also glad Jayson came back. Thanks for the concern. :)

  48. I've never seen painted fish before. I don't like the idea of them being tattoed though. Have a great weekend

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes, what Jams said.

I hope your weekend is going well. :)

  50. I have never heard of such a thing... then again, I don't have any kind of fish at my place... Learn something new every day. Painted Fish perfect for the theme!

    ReplyDelete
  51. The fish are beautiful, but I don't like it that they are hurt (:

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hmmm, EastCoastLife, you did write earlier in the post that the fish don't feel pain. Still, I know where you're coming from re the unnecessary unnaturalness of it all... :S

    ReplyDelete
  53. Although they looks very cool and bright,I agree, there is no need for painting numbers on the fish. I love your photos.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I agree with you, it is cruel even if they feel no pain. :-/

    ReplyDelete
  55. oh...that explains the mystery of why the fish lose their markings after some time

    ReplyDelete
  56. That is illegal! Have you seen purple chicks and pink dogs?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I've heard of painted fish, but I've never seen them before. They are wild! And I hope it doesn't hurt even if they are sedated. I noticed that my own goldfish lose any black coloring and turn all orange. I think it is from the food. Happy hunting!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I agree with almost everybody above - I too feel this is cruel and I can´t believe it is legal…
    Have a great weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh my, I feel so sorry for those poor fish. I wish people wouldn't buy them.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I notice there are numbers tatooed on the scales of the fish which I believe are guppies. I will randomly pick the four numbers and use them for my next 4-digit draw. Wish me luck, man!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. How interesting that that dye the fish! I didn't know that.

    ReplyDelete
  62. This is shocking, I wonder if it happens around here too. The fish do look attractive.:(

    ReplyDelete
  63. They are unique and interesting...Its my first time to see like that. Happy weekend. Mine is up too.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I am loving those painted fish, how pretty they are.

    ReplyDelete
  65. That's a real good idea. I will suggest that to our favourite restaurant at the Garda Lake in Italy where I can choose my trout ! If it would be numbered it would be much easier for me ! and it looks nice ! Not like prisoners with a number on the back !

    ReplyDelete
  66. Once again, I learn something new! Great photos for this week.

    Mine's up!

I hope you have a chance to visit. Have a great weekend!

  67. There are so many heartless businessman out there. They inject all the colour into the fish so that they can sell the fish at higher price. The colour will faded slowly and then the buyers will only found out they have been con. for example of blood parrot fish, they cut the tail of the fish when small and the fish will become love shaped when they grow. Really too bad.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I wonder what is wrong with the colours they originally came in? I am trying to figure out why fish with rather badly tattooed polka dots are better than the plain old nature-given colours.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I had no idea that was done! It's like the aquarium I saw where they had hundreds of silver fish in a tank so that it looked like shimmering silver. No thoughts that the fish didn't have enough room, just that it provided people with a photo opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Poor fishes. They're "made" so artificially with those "make-up". :(

    ReplyDelete
  71. What a great take on this week's theme!!!!

    Very original!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I know, poor fishes. It must have hurt them to color or paint with needles, I presume?

    ReplyDelete
  73. HI ECL,

You have been tagged to save the world - See you at Empyty Streets 1027 http://emptystreets27.blogspot.com :) XOXO

    ReplyDelete
  74. Poor guys already live in the confined space of an aquarium and they have to be tattooed, too LOL. I wonder what is more merciful, quick death by frying pan or a slooow death by natural cause with a body beautiful LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  75. They should stop "dyeing" fishes and food! All these chemicals are not good for health! And the poor fishes have to suffer just to attract customers!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Are painted fish sold in Singapore? Name and shame the pet shops!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I used to keep goldfish, ecl. Eventually they all died! :(

    ReplyDelete
  78. Do they have a shorter life span because of that?

Because since they feel no pain like you said, you probably can't say they "hurt" the fishes...

I don't approve of it either, I'm just saying argumentatively :)

    Cheers!
