House No. 1 - WW

Charming English Cottage with Fireplace ........

........ in Singapore!? xiao (crazy)

It's House No. 1. This charming cottage was built in the 1930s by the then Chief Surveyor, Langdon Williams as a holiday retreat in Pulau Ubin. The architecture is tudor-style, with adaptations to the tropical climate. It's similar to cottages built in tea plantations during the British colonial era.

This unique house is designated a Conservation Building by Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore.

It has probably the only working fireplace left in Singapore.

In tropical Singapore, with temperatures of above 30 degree Celsius daily, why do you need a working fireplace? *scratch head*

  1. Oh it is really so English! Ya, that same thought came into my mind too about the fireplace. May be they put it in for the sake of completeness? To be 100% English?

  2. Doreen,
I think so too... they must be missing England so much then.... every thing has to be perfect. :)

  18. Why do we need a working fireplace in Singapore? You don't know meh? Aircon can be very cold, especially inside the office. So we need fireplace lor.

Seriously, one time I was working in KL. The aircon was so freezingly cold that I did have a heat blower underneath my feet.

Ah, time to vote for you! (Though I must protest that I hate leaving IC number and phone number over the Internet ... ha ha ha)

  20. England should be nice. I visited London about a few years ago. Frankly speaking, I prefer Scotland more than London itself. But London is great still....there are so many museums to visit (and admission to most is free).

  32. It must be one of those imports that the English brought with them when they came over to Singapore.

  52. I never would have expected to see a Tudor-style house in Singapore. I wonder if they ever used the fireplace. Since you don't need the warmth, you could stick a big vase of flowers in there or use it for extra storage space. Or just build a very small fire and sit far back.

Hope you can stop by – my post is here.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Haha it is definitely so European. You won't believe it but we brought a sauna thingy all the way from Holland to Singapore. It will be installed in our farm in the Philippines when we move there :) Crazy huh? I know.

I dunno it it's ever gonna be used- maybe as a stove.

off topic: I am so busy right now with so many things but I do hope to catch up after we come back from our work-vacation in the Philippines. We'll be leaving next week. Thanks for dropping by ECL!

    Thanks for your votes.

I think Parliament House should put a fireplace inside. Many MPs and even PM Lee and MM Lee are wearing jackets to keep warm. A roaring fireplace would be good. :P

  55. oceanskies,
So envious of you that you have been to London and Scotland. I would definitely visit the museums and the countryside.

Waiting for that day to come ... soon.

  70. stephanie,
I presume they had used the fireplace because it said in its brochure : 'the only working fireplace in Singapore'.

It's not used now. It's just for display. :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Jade,
You bought a sauna from Holland to Singapore and then to the Philippines!? o.O

Philippines is just as hot as Singapore. If you work on a farm, you would be sweating ... why need a sauna? hehe...

See you when you come back.
    have a good trip!

  72. gallicissa,
Yes, Pulau Ubin is great for bird watching!!

Tried to vote for you of course, but could not figure out all the registrations? Whats the I/C No?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I would love to stay in that cottage. It is indeed a beautiful english, although I quite agree...not too much need for the fireplace :-) However as a true fireplace lover I would have lots of pretty things lined up on the mantle of the fire. Thanks for showing us this.

    ReplyDelete
  79. hey is this a recent picture? I've been to that tudor house many times in the past. IN fact, I've stayed over (ahem...u know) and fished there until they blocked up the place a few years back as it was fallen apart. It was sad for me actualy because I've used it as a personal getaway a few times away with frens and students. Mayb I shld dig up my pictures and blog about the trips.

  81. Aiyah, maybe he's burning some wood in the fireplace to roast chicken and boil some water for tea. I know of a restaurant in Subang Parade which used to show customers their burning of Bakau wood to roast chicken. Besides, English people like tea, don't they?

  82. How cool, it's very pretty! Good observation on the fireplace, LOL!

The first time my husband and I set eyes on and also used a fireplace was in a Melbourne village in early winter. Laying in front of the warm fireplace, drinking an awesome red wine was a wonderful memory never to be forgotten.

  88. sho,
