Whacking Small People 打小人!!

PhotoHunt - Small

This is a Chinese custom which is common in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and even Malaysia.

The 'small' people here refers to those who tell tales, gossip, spread rumours, ........ do stuff in order to hurt others.

There are several ways I deal with these 'small' people. I would write their names and birth dates on Hell Paper, burn it and send them to Hell!! Hope the King of Hades would send his loyal guards, Cow-head (牛头 ) and Horse-face (马面) to take them away!

Another way to vent my anger is to 'whack the Hell out of them' (打小人 )! You would see this happening often at the temple outside Waterloo Street in Singapore. This is usually done by the older folks.

You buy cut outs of paper dolls and whack them hard with your filthy slippers. As you whack you call out the name of the person intended, cursing and swearing at them and even their family members. When you're done, throw the paper doll into the fire. Send it to Hell. It's a great way to release your pent-up emotions! I sleep better after that. hahaha......

In Hong Kong, you can see people queuing to have their 'small' people whack by professional whackers everyday!

I found this interesting website where you can damn someone to Hell. Be it your irritating colleagues, nosy neighbours, foes ..... send the 'small' people to Hell!!!

It's a fun site actually. President George Bush's name is in it! I've checked some of the posts and not many are vicious or hateful. But when you are mad with someone, you would want to do some silly things. ^-^

  3. This is the first time I have heard about this. It's like Chinese voodoo huh?

    ReplyDelete
  4. giddy tigress,
    No voodoo.

It's one way of letting out the pent-up anger and frustrations for the people. They believe that by doing it the bad guys or bad luck would leave them alone.

  18. A nice little custom to vent frustration and get what is inside of you out so it will not intefere with the good things that you have inside your spirit.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Haven't tried this before. Would prefer to whack the real person. hahahaha, but then I would get myself into trouble. Emm...not worth it at all lah!

  21. Hmmm, interesting. I have never heard of this. I may have to give it a shot sometime. Great photos.

  22. I have never heard about the customs you are talking about and find it interesting. Where I'm from (southeastern U.S.) we will say someone is small to indicate that did something mean. Your way sounds like a harmless way to get rid of pent up anger and perhaps avoid whacking the actual person, ha. I've seen some sites online where you can throw virtual darts at political figures you don't like. I guess it's the same idea. Interesting post for the small theme.

I found your story amazing, and have someone I want to send to hell myself...hummm think I'll go check out that website

  25. oceanskies,
To me, I think it helps to elminate whatever vengeance one has. If there is an avenue to release your frustrations and bitterness, it does make the person feel better.

People seek vengeance only when they don't get to let off their frustrations. All the bottled up bad emotions erupt at the s;ightest provocation.

    ReplyDelete
  26. HAHAHA! I've heard a lot of this but never really experienced it. :D

  51. LOL! During secondary school when we hate a teacher but couldn't find a way to vent our frustrations at her, we will normally sacrifice a piece of test pad paper, write the teacher's name of it, crush it up, place it under our desks and take turns to step and step and step on the paper before sending it to the wastepaper basket. Wahahahaha!

  52. I'm not sure if this is like a voodoo spell or something or maybe something lighter than the voodoo spell.
