Colonoscopy is a test that allows your doctor to look at the inner lining of your large intestine (rectum and colon). He uses a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope to look at the colon.
A colonoscopy helps find ulcers, polyps, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding. During a colonoscopy, tissue samples can be collected (biopsy) and abnormal growths can be taken out.
Colonoscopy can also be used as a screening test to check for cancer or precancerous growths in the colon or rectum (polyps).
The colonoscope is a thin, flexible tube that ranges from 48 in. to 72 in. long. A small video camera is attached to the colonoscope so that your doctor can take pictures or video of the large colon. The colonoscope can be used to look at the whole colon and the lower part of the small colon. A test called sigmoidoscopy shows only the rectum and the lower part of the colon.
Before this test, I need to clean out my colon (colon prep). Colon prep takes 1 to 2 days depending on which type of prep your doctor recommends. Mine has to be taken the evening before the test. For many people, the prep for a colonoscopy is more trying than the actual test.
I have to stay home during my prep time since I need to use the bathroom often. The colon prep causes loose, frequent stools and diarrhea so that my colon will be empty for the test. The colon prep may be uncomfortable and I felt very hungry on the clear liquid diet.
If you need to drink a special solution as part of your prep, be sure to have clear fruit juices or soft drinks to drink after the prep because the solution tastes salty.
Eastcoast, have had a colonoscopy and yes the prep is the worst of it. I go for another a week from Friday. I wish you the best "tomorrow" morning. I'm sure everything will come out all right. Ha!
Oh, I do wish you good luck with that - and the END results!!!
I've always thought that it sounds so scary to go through that. I've done a gastroscopy and they had to put me to sleep to do it. It was no fun. Left me with wounds in the throat. I think it's better to be awake, then they have to be more careful...
Yes, it sure is scary, so maybe you could make it as your "Share Your Scare" post for the Thursday Lifecruiser cyber cruise.... *giggles*
Good luck with this. My grandmother died early from an unwillingness to do this kind of a procedure because she didn't want a black man looking up her bum. The joys of ingrained racism. Sad but true.
