My student trying an experiment to see if she can roll up the road :D
Jeju is such a beautiful island, it is indeed the paradise of Korea. I visited Jeju Island with a couple of my students and we had so much fun.
There is a mysterious road on Jeju Island. The place was very crowded and traffic came to a standstill as everyone was giving this oddity a try.
Our driver pulled up his 40-seater bus to a starting line of this mysterious uphill road, put it in neutral and took his foot off the break. An amazing thing happened ..... rather than moving backwards ..… the bus moved forward! Our mouths literally dropped. It was an incredible sight seeing cars and buses rolling uphill!
Next our tour guide poured some water on the mysterious road, the water flowed uphill too!
If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.
It’s one of those things that you really have to experience to get the feel. No picture or video can do it justice, but maybe this will inspire people to try it for themselves when they go to Jeju! That was a really fun place.
A check on Wikipedia reveals :
A magnetic hill or gravity hill is a place where a slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope due the layout of the surrounding land, creating the optical illusion that water flows uphill or a car left out of gear will roll uphill.

Looking forward to visiting the road and the Island someday and experience it myself. :)
ReplyDeleteI encountered a similar place (though not an actual road) in Knott's Berry Farm in California. Billed as the haunted shack or such like, it all felt somewhat disconcerting! ;O
ReplyDeleteThis looks like so much fun!

How strange! A Polish friend told me about this phenomenon in his town but I thought he was joking. I must investigate further.

i've heard of a similar story---it's a road on the island of Negros. i thought it as just a story, didn't know it's an optical illusion. very interesting!
ReplyDeleteWe have a couple of roads like this here in Camada - you're right - unless you actually experience it for yourself it is hard to believe. I can see why students would be fascinated by this kind of thing.
