Food Republic Beer Garden @ St James Power Station

Lo hei at the Beer Garden

My hubby and I were invited to a food tasting session at Food Republic Beer Garden@ St James Power Station. It was our first time here and we like its open air environment.

I was told this place highlights the scene from the streets of Singapore in the 60s. There are 18 rustic-style pushcarts, truck stalls and kiosks selling all manner of Singapore hawker food. Around the beer garden, there are different eye-catching memorabilia which colour the area with nostalgia. I was amused at the bird cages strung up from lamp post to lamp post, antiqued bicycles and kerosene lamps.

Since it's the Chinese New Year season, our hosts have generously ordered a salmon yu sheng for us. It was an unique experience having a 'lo hei' under the stars.

This beer garden easily seats close to 400 diners who would be surrounded by stalls serving up Singapore's most popular and delicious hawker fare.

Nightly live entertainment

Food Republic Beer Graden comes alive nightly with live entertainment from talented local bands. The lady vocalist belted out Chinese songs from the 70s while we ate. My husband and I enjoyed listening to the songs very much. The vocalist sings very well.

Besides the usual coffee and soft drinks, this Street Bar serves a large selection of bottled and international beers, a range of spirits, fine wine, champagnes, cocktails and mocktails. You can order Singapore's most beloved cocktail - the Singapore Sling here.

Some of the yummy eats :

Loromg 9 Geylang Frog Leg Porridge

I frequent this stall in Geylang and I would have to wait for seats every time because it is very crowded. Now I can just come here for my supper fix. :)

The famous Balestier Bak Kut Teh (Pork Rib Soup) is available here.

I love this Hokkien Fried Prawn Noodle from Thye Chua Fried Hokkien Mee.

Have a beer, order some BBQ stingray or BBQ chicken wings

The hosts and bloggers

Our hosts were very hospitable, our whole table was laden with food from every food stall and we also get to takeaway some food. Thanks for a wonderful evening!

Oh how you have made my mouth water. Such colours and variety. Can I be a little nosey and ask what the pink/red food is on the large white plate? It looks so very interesting - I have found myself looking at the plate and wondering about the flavours but mainly what the flavour is of this particular food?

400 diners !!!! Yikes, that's a lot... The food look very interesting - I don't think I have eaten anything of those dishes actually. Well, salmon of course, but not in the same style.

Tyna,
The food is indeed delicious. If you visit Singapore, you can come here for a taste of authentic Singapore food.

Horsoon,
It opens from 6pm to 5 am, so you can come here for dinner or supper, after or before heading to Sentosa island.

Kloggers/Polly,
The colourful ingredients on the white plate are shredded vegetables. The pink stuff is pickled ginger. We tossed all these ingredients together after adding seasoning and a sweet, sour sauce to it.

Chinese living in Singapore, especially businessmen and working people, love to eat this dish during the Chinese New Year (CNY) season as it is a symbol of abundance, prosperity and good fortune.

For those unfamiliar with this dish, it as an Asian-style salad with various shredded vegetables and served with assorted toppings, a sweet plum sauce and slices of raw fish (usually salmon sashimi or mackerel). Each ingredient added is well thought of because there is a corresponding auspicious greeting with it.

Joy,
The BBQ stingray is awesome. It is marinated with a spicy sauce. You have to try it when you come to Singapore.

AVCr8teur,
It was a fun evening. The hosts were too generous, serving us with almost all the popular dishes from the stalls. We couldn't walk after all these food. :D

Lifecruiser Travel,
The beer garden is spacious and windy as it is located near the sea, so we don't find it crowded even if it is fully occupied.

Overseas visitors can have a taste of our local dishes and snacks here as the beer garden serves a huge variety of Singapore's popular and famous hawker fare.

Great place, great food!

It gave me the nostalgia feeling of a return to the Orchard Rd Carpark's Hawker Stores in the 70s.

If only they would include the "Waterloo Street" Indian rojak (my favourite) and dessert like the ice-kacang ball, it would be Perfect.

This would be my popular site for my oversea guests. It is so near to the two IRs. After their meals, they may continue with their games or part two at St James Club.
