Nike+ Human Race 10K Event - WW

I was on my way to lunch last Sunday when I saw the queue! It was more than 2km long!
Thousands of people were queuing for something. It must be good stuff! Should I join the queue?

This is what they were queuing for :

I met a nice young man, Jarrell Gerald. Oops, sorry ^o^ He had been queuing since 9.50 am ..... finally he got his Race Pack at 12.05pm.

Gerald posing happily with his Official Race Day Tee

Nike is hosting race events in 25 cities around the world. On 31st August 2008, more than 1 million runners will put on their iPods to race in 25 locations around the world at the same time. Uniting athletes world-wide through the World's Largest Running Event : The Nike+ Human Race 10K.

I'm concerned that Nike is promoting the idea of running races with iPods. Blissfully deaf iPod runners are a hazard in most road races. I hope the runners would exercise caution when running.

I can't help wondering how much Nike is benefiting from this huge advertising campaign. :P

Race Flag Off Time : 4.15 pm

Start Point: The Esplanade Bridge
End Point: The Padang

So all runners must have ipod to be able to join the race?

eastcoastlife said...

Doreen,
The runners have to be registered for this event. The iPods help them to track their progress.

Nike Sports Music is created to inspire the athletes and also to give an energy boost when it is needed.

Wow! Sports is becoming so fun!

napaboaniya,
I didn't join. You must be joking! The queue was more than 2 km long! I went for a leisurely lunch in an air-conditioned restaurant instead. hehe...

I'm a coach potato.

No, I didn't. Phew!

Nike will be getting a huge amount of publicity that's for sure! I thought there would be some charity tie-in but there doesn't seem to be any that I can see. I'm always very suspicious of these large corporations and their motives, but Nike do some good work through their Nike Foundation.

sandy,
Yep... see the danger. tsk tsk tsk....

According to its website, it is giving donations to Lance Armstrong Foundation (cancer survivors), NineMillion.org (refugee children) and WWF (wildlife).

That's like running to races, one in the queue and one the day of the race.

Thanks for stopping by and tell you hubby Happy Birthday.

Hi Ken!
Yep... two races for the runners. :)

Happy Birthday, Ken!... and my hubby. :)

Good series of pictures, I too wonder the purpose of linking Nike and iPod with races.

I have gotten used to using my Ipod just about everywhere. You just have to be a little careful.

Nice series of pictures. They are very colorful.

Oh I know somebody who'd probably be so into this. She needs to hear about it... I'll send her your link.

Me? Oh no... with my knees I absolutely do not run any more. (Unless somebody's chasing me.)

I didn't train for this... :-)

Singaporean love queues for some reason...lolzz

Eh you running??

I think it is a pretty bad idea to run with iPods on too. Here in Toronto we have had numerous accidents involving people not paying attention because they are listening to music too loud etc. Great pics though!

Happy WW :)

I would rather avoid the crowd. :(
Thanks for tracing to the beginning of the queue for your dear readers. This is rather blog-worthy....I didn't realise that there's such a run.

Wow I've heard about this too ECL!I'd like to join it next time- for now still need to get in shape.

Does runners need to have an ipod to join coz I am not really into the ipod thingy but if they are giving it away for free- bring it on;)

never tried joining events like these. looks like it'll be one full sweaty day!

iPod is cool. Wonder how to live without one...

Apart from listning to songs, the Nike+iPod gadget is mainly a training tool; it has a counter displaying your time, distance, or calories burned, and other host of stuff, for your running session.

Expensive gadget though :(

I hate queues even if it's a fairly short one, don't talk about 2km - it's crazy! Nike will of course be getting lots of publicity for this, but I agree running with iPod is so dangerous and a health hazard. Someone should make a protest and customers of Nike's iPod should get educated on this danger.

Mmmm, sound interesting. Remind me time to hit the gym again. Been lazy lately!

Jackie said...

I wouldn't bother to wait in such a long queue. Anyway I have boycotted Nike since hearing about their child labour so would never join the race.

hiya

i'm the guy posing with the shirt in your blog. just to clarify that this queue was actually for the people who have already registered and paid for the run. I reckon the long snaking line was because some (or should I say many, including myself) of them came from Padang after finishing their Army Half Marathon. It sure was a long wait, but at least I chitchatted with people around me...

oh and btw, name's Gerald not Jarrell hehe... cheers.
