Singapore Zam Zam, a well-known local Indian Muslim restaurant, is 100 years old today! To celebrate its 100th anniversary and also Prophet Muhammad's birthday, it gave out 1500 packets of their yummy Mutton Briyani (fragrant rice). Free lunch for the lucky 1500 people who queued for it.
I didn't even have time to queue for it..... the first batch of free Nasi Briyani was given out by 12.30 pm and the next distribution was at 2pm. I didn't want to wait, so I walked over to House of Briyani for my favourite dish. hehe.....
When my son heard that I went to get free Nasi Briyani, he was aghast. I wasn't there for the free briyani, I went to get photos for this post. Kay Poh (busybody) ECL! hehe.....
Briyani rice is fragrant because it is cooked with spices. The spices used are cloves, cardamon, cinnamon, wasabi, bay leaves, coriander and mint leaves. Also added in the rice are ghee, ginger, onion, garlic and yoghurt.

Zam Zam serves a mean murtabak, have you tried that?
I love Indian and Muslim food but they are usually greasy and contains high calories. Can only eat once in a while.... *sad*
That looks so yummy!!! And thank you I forgot what the theme for Photo Hunters was this week lol!
sue,
How could you!? hehe....
See you on PhotoHunt.
that's impressive - 100 years! the rice sounds flavorful, and interesting. i'm a meat and potatoes kind of girl, but i'd be willing to give it a try. :)
happy ww - thursday style.
dkaye,
You have to try it.... you would love it! The rice is fragrant and the meat is tender and tasty. :)
I'm like DKaye... meat and potatoes but I would also try this.
100 years old! Very impressive!
Another good briyani place. opposite siglap centre. a coffeeshop called 'makan makan'(signboard in red).
serves good briyani rice, but only served on friday & sat I think. must be early as well.
p/s: i'm not the spokeswoman of 'makan makan' hor :P
*goes back to my prison cell*
Zam Zam!! I was there just before I came London. Was determined to binge before I drag myself up the plane.
Remembered that there's a perfume shop beside it. Wife got a small bottle of 'rosemary' from there... smells... abit odd though.
That was a nice gesture by the restaurant, I wish them more clients =)
And thank you for posting this. It gave me an idea for weekend meals, Indian recipes yummy!
The Briyani rice there tasted quite nice. The Murtabak there is nice too. Thanks for going there to get photos for the post. You seem to be promoting Singapore more and more. I won't be surprised if your readers visit Singapore after reading your lovely posts on Singapore.
Is the Briyani from House of Briyani good? I have passed by it so very often during my walks about the Kampong Glam area, but I have never eaten it. I just don't seem to see any vegetables being served there....maybe i couldn't see the vegetables.
I don't know if I could be bothered to queue. I would rather pay then queue. :)
i'm not a fan of this nasi... dunno why... ha? need to piak myself oso ah? :P
happy easter, ecl! xoxo.
Haha I also like nasi briyani. :D
I don't think there is wasabi in nasi briyani...
uhmm... i honestly don't like the way it looks on the last pic. I haven't tried it either coz i am not from there. hehe. But with the description that you gave, i'll bet it tastes good. Cheers to the 100-year-old resto!
Good for you, ECL. Out there with your camera reporting for us!
Oh wow! What a way to celebrate. 100 years is awesome.
100 year old is a long time. I wish I could smell it. With all those spices it must have a wonderful aroma.
FREE !!! so generous!!! my own fav would be the mutton briyani :)
That looks scrumptious! YUMMMM....
we went there with jane and jeremy from thailand when she came a-visiting. yes, with oceanskies too.
oh, wanted to add. zam zam was so hospitable, i wondered how they knew and recognised me to be the friend oceanskies and company was waiting for. i mean i was just coming out from the cab and they told me my friend was upstairs and escorted me up.
Good morning, dear Spicy Mama. (At least it is "morning" here in the western USA right now) :)
I have been looking in the window of your nice blog frequently, but haven't come in for quite a while.
What an interesting restaurant. 100 years! How SUPER the food must be in order to be able to stick around for that long! I envy you. Nothing like that here. At least nothing QUITE like that. :)
Have a good day. Come see us again sometime.
Ok, ok, you are killing me with all these food pictures!! Since I am dying, can I have a few last wishes? One involves a padang..
Briyani... one of the famous Indian dishes as well? It looks quite nice. I might join the queue if I was there... hehe
Go to Spice Junction on race course road to get the deal deal. not the nasi biriyani but the real deal all the way from kerela in india. Also try the original kerela parotha (roti prata's daddy). the place is near gayatri restaurant...
