Yahoo!! Singapore wins bid to host Youth Olympic Games 2010!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Singapore wins the right to host the inaugural Youth Olympics in 2010!!
Singapore won Moscow by a vote of 53 to 44. It will be the first time that Singapore is hosting a sporting event of such magnitude.

Singapore is a small young city but it showed that its size-is-not-everything. Singaporeans, people from all walks of life in the nation of 4.5 million people, supported the bid.

They showed their support by blogging, chatting on forums, posting videos and setting up websites. More than 550 companies publicly supported the bid.

I was at the Final Countdown ceremony this evening.
Thousands of cheering supporters wearing red and white, the colours of our national flag, turned up to support Singapore. When it was announced that PM Lee Hsien Loong would be present, I know we have won.

IOC chief Jacques Rogge made the announcement himself from the IOC headquarters in Lausanne. 9 cities bid for it. Athens, Bangkok, Turin, Singapore and Moscow were left before it became to the final two.

3,500 athletes, aged between 14 and 18, will be competing in 26 sports at the Games.

Singapore, huat ah!!!

It is a great honour and privilege for all of us as it will be the first time that the Olympic flame will be in Southeast Asia and in Singapore.

We should be happy about the win, but we need to be more grounded. Let's us get back to the reality of running YOG2010.

These are interesting reads:
