Dr Chen from Penang tagged me. Penang is well-known for its Assam Laksa, Five-spice pork and now durians, thanks to the durian feast Malayian PM Abdullah Badawi hosted in honour of our PM Lee Hsien Loong's visit. Now in Siingapore, some enterprising durian sellers are touting Penang durians which PM Lee ate! tsk tsk tsk ..... I doubt those are the real things.
Anyway, I would be meeting Dr Chen in July when I go visiting in Penang. Oh no, not for a medical consultation, but to meet up with Malaysian bloggers - LB, Dr Bernard Chan and Dr Chen. Yeah!!! I will try to locate the Penang durians, taste them and write a review on them. I am going to gorge myself silly on delectable Penang food! haha!
So here's my favourite : Shanghai Dimsum
Shanghai Steamed buns (xiaolongbao 小笼包 )
Shanghai Fried Buns ( sheng jian bao 生煎包)
I have the good fortune to taste lots of delicious food from many parts of China on many of my business trips there. I get to eat many weird food too. hehe.....
I'm not a big eater, I prefer small dainty portions of food. I don't like too many meat dishes and please don't ever invite me to buffets! I love dimsum. Hong Kong Dimsum is popular and well-known in the world. But I fell in love with Shanghai Dimsum when I was there. Their buns are so skillfully made and taste out of this world!
The Shanghai steamed bun is a unique masterpiece. Freshly minced pork is wrapped in a thin piece of dough skin, sealed by nimble fingers with complicating pleats and steamed. The steaming causes the juice from the meat filling to be caught in the thin skin.
Picking up a bun with chopsticks from the bamboo steamer requires skill. If you break the skin, the delicious soup in the bun will be wasted. There is a unique way of eating these steam buns too. You bite a small piece of the skin, suck the soup out, put some young shredded ginger and vinegar on the 'dejuiced' bun and then pop it into your mouth. Ohhhh.... heavenly!
You can find a huge variety of dimsum treats in China. The simple dumpling has more than a hundred types of fillings!

Yeah, I love siew loong paus too. Funnily enough, I didn't know about them until last year!!! You say ulu or not ulu?!! Very ulu! But now that I've tried them, I am in love with them already, and I can't wait to try them out your style, dipping with ginger and vinegar!! How come no one told me that before?!!
lb,
You ate siew loong paus when you went back to Malaysia only, right? Yah, ulu! hehehe.....
There is a certain way to eat them. I think many peole don't know about it. I learnt so many things about eating dimsum and some Chinese dishes when I was in China. Very interesting. It really enhances the taste of the food!
ahhhh.... talking about food makes me hungry!
Can't wait to taste those xiao long paus.. ;)
Argh, I have a weakness for dimsum, and you just made me hungry again, just right after lunch even!
Suddenly that spaghetti I planned to have for dinner tonight just doesn't seem that good an idea anymore...
Everything Shanghai! I like the Shanghai Onion Pancake... Yum! I didn't know there's a special style of eating siew loong paus. I would just pop the whole thing into my mouth in two or three bites. *grin*
I love siewloongpau too but I have come across a few that I find a tad salty. Don't quite take to the onion pancake, though.
Ya...ya.....get lokter chen to bring you on a gastronomic tour of Penang. She and I...we can eat and yak and eat and yak for 3 to 4 hours! :D
absolutely love siew loong paus! we took LB to have his first bite of one last July, heheh! so yummy with ginger and vinegar. must hunt down siew loong paus here in Sydney, I'm starting to crave for them after seeing that photo of yours!

Hi ECL,
I would love to play but I don't know how to copy the list keeping all the links with it. Is there a secret?
Your post about Shanghai buns is wonderful and is making me very hungry!
Where do you usually have your Shanghai buns in Singapore?

Come back to Singapore, I bring you to eat the best ones in Singapore!
sicarii,

ahhh... I have a new dimsum kaki!
rinnah,
There are lots more varieties of Shanghai dimsum, I have no space to review them. Another time. :)
Pop the whole thing into your mouth? And let the soup burst (explode) inside your mouth at the first bite? Isn't the soup hot? My xiaolongbaos must arrive steaming hot at my table.
hehe... to each his own style lah!
hi nyonyapenang,
lokter chen can yak for so long and so much arh! hehehe....
Looking forward to the tcss trip! :D
May,
Another siew loong paus fan! So you're the one who brought lb out of his ulu cave by introducing him to siew loong paus!
Yah, I agree with you. Must find siew loong paus in Sydney. So that when I go to visit you, can still have my favourite siew loong paus to eat! hehe.....

Time now is 11.30pm. I look at the pictures in this blog and I suddenly feel extremely hungry.
Meh :(
Anyway, looking forward to your report on Penang durians! I love the food in Penang. Whenever I drive up there, I will spend RM20 on hawker food in one go. I mean ... one bowl of Laksa is never quite enough, is it? Consider how long the drive is!
I love XLB and Pan fried buns. Onion pancake - too much very jelat maybe coz too much flour :O
Ya lah, after I saw the nasi padang portions three of you(you with KM and shilpa) ate, I know you small eater lah, you. You eat buffet sure lugi wan!
Hello Wilfrid,
:) .... great dimsum huh.
I'm sure my Penang friends are going to bring me to some great eats! Yes, driving up to Penang is no joke, man! Sure have to eat more lah! hahaha....
I haven't been to Penang for a long time, so this time I'm going to take a good look and wolf down as much food as I can! hahaha.....
I never have success when I try to 'suck the juice' out of the bao.
It is simply too hot +.+"
tigerfish,
Yeah! You are another xlb lover!
The onion pancake may be a little too floury, but done by a good chef it is crispy and savoury. It is a simple dish. It depends on how skilful the chef is.
yalor, I lugi when I eat buffet. After 2 plates of food, I surrender! hehehe....
yenjai,
You have delicate lips! hahaha....
i had ban mian with dumpling as substitute for siew loong pau after reading your post.
